Disappointing product

This was my second DVR so I had a good idea what to expect when I bought this Pioneer DVR. I bought it to replace a Toshiba RD-XS32 that began to fail in burning new DVDs after about 15 months, but the Pioneer failed in burning new DVDs right out of...

Hmmmmm.... I guess it looks nice.

Poor features compared to competitive models...Defective right out of the box...Indifferent customer service...

This Technology Changes Your TV Viewing Habits

I've used this recorder four months now and it's the greatest thing since all season tires. To my mind, the greatest benefit is how it changes TV viewing habits. Instead of sitting through commercials and repetitious news items one can speed through ...

A great time-saver because you watch what you want, when you want.

Getting used to the menus and functions can be quite frustrating at first.

Best Invention this Decade!

I'm a techno-junkie, always on the lookout for the next cool gadget. After seeing TIVO at an friend's house in the US, I was eagerly waiting for it to come to Canada, even though you have to buy the downloads by subscription. I did some research and ...

Easy to record/watch/find shows, lots of great features, good manual, great value for the money

download time, TV Guide has room for improvement

A decent DVD R (too many features?)

I was always one for buying brand name, main stream units. I bought this unit with the intention of copying all our old VHS family based videos onto a DVD format, since VHS is becoming somewhat a thing of the past. As far as the unit doing what it's ...

Excellent quality and does what it's supposed to do

Poorly worded menu, like bad streets signs. Where do I go next?

Very functional

I did a fair amount of research before requesting the dvr-533-h-s as a Christmas present. Not sure where it was purchased or for how much. My main reason for wanting this particular unit is the inclusion of the Mini-DV input on the front for direct ...

Performs several functions very well, including Mini-DV input.

No TV Guide support for satellite users, no digital coaxial audio.

Product Specifications

It's a one-stop shop for watching DVD movies, recording TV shows and home movies onto a Hard Disk Drive, then watching or recording them to DVD. Here's what makes it so fun to use: The built-in 80GB Hard Disk Drive lets you record lots of home movies and TV shows for temporary storage. Once they're recorded you can watch them whenever you want, edit them, delete them, or burn them to DVD. The DVR-533H-S can hold up to 170 hours of content (recorded at lowest video quality - SEP Mode). When burning your recorded content to DVD from the Hard Disk Drive, an hour-long program recorded in SEP (lowest video quality) mode can take less than 30 seconds to burn - that's approximately 120x (max) speed. With Disc Backup, a Pioneer exclusive, you can make a direct file transfer of your home-movie DVD back to the Hard Disk Drive, and from that make as many copies of your home movie as you want, all at blazing speed. With the recording mode set to SEP mode (lowest video quality), you can get up to 10 hours on one disc. Stuck in the middle of a task like setting up a recording? Don't know the next step? Just press HELP, and you'll see an on-screen recommendation on what to do next. The i-LINK (a.k.a. "DV" and "IEEE 1394") interface allows you to transfer your DV (Digital Video) home movies smoothly to the Hard Disk Drive. Just connect the bi-directional DV input on the unit's front panel to your camcorder's DV input, and begin. And if your movies were shot in analog format, inputs for composite video/S-video and Left-Right audio are provided for dubbing them to DVD.
