Sharp TU-T2HR32 review

Sharp produces one of the best Freeview+HD recorders around

User interface ; HD & SD icture quality ; Highly customisable

Relatively small hard disk ; Poor remote control ; No USB media layback

Sharp has made one of the finest Freeview HD recorders, though it's a one-trick pony; media playback and transfer of files from USB would be a nice addition, as would some kind of media streaming. It has an (presently unused) Ethernet LAN port, after all.

Sharp TU-T2HR32 review

As always, the cable and satellite boys have already gone one-up in anticipation of this first batch of Freeview+HD recorders - Sky's added 1TB hard drive models to its HD boxes, and Virgin Media's V+HD has had three tuners for yonks.

GUI, HD pictures, speed

Remote, noisy in operation, size of HDD

Lively, colourful pictures from both standard definition and HD channels are an essential part of its allure, but the way it's built around good-looking, easy to use onscreen menus - and the speed of the box itself - makes it an attractive option for...

Sharp TUT2HR32 review

Sharp's TUT2HR32 Freeview+HD recorder ticks the right boxes, with twin HD tuners, a 320GB hard drive and bright, colourful interface. Unfortunately, it also generates more fan noise than a Take That concert.

Colourful interface ; Easy to use

Intrusive fan noise ; USB for firmware updates only ; No channel display

Overall, the TUT2HR32 is a workmanlike PVR, devoid of the niceties offered by rivals such as Toshiba's similarly priced HDR5010. The fact that it also doubles as a Dyson Airblade does not really count in its favour.

When it comes to fundamental Freeview HD functionality this PVR is hard to fault.

Overall, the TU-T2HR32 really is hard to fault. Yes, you can point to the lack of digital media support via USB or the comparatively measly 320GB hard disk – things that ultimately cost the Sharp 'must buy' status – but when it comes to fundamental...

Poor product best avoided

Fan is extremely noisy, and only cuts out 10 minutes after the unit is turned off. Constant problems with recording, I have lost count of the number of times this item has either failed to record a programme, or part recorded one. Also, it will record...

picture quality can't be bettered , tried quite a few freeview boxes , currently using a BT Vision box as this gave the best quality picture but just put this box onto my partners 42 LCD and was pleasantly surprised just how clear the picture quality...

as with ALL PVRs , fan noise can be quite noticable at times but as they all need a cooling fan , just have to put up with it

easy to use

curser buttons could be more prominent, no live catch up, seem to record all night when set for 1 programme, blue lights are strong for a bedroom apart from that a good machine

Very good menu system, easy to use

No clock on display. Also no display of which channel is current. If set to record a current programme while turned on, you cannot put it in standby mode untill recording has finished, unlike the SKY+ box. After using it for about one month, I can say...
