Sony SVR-S500 review

Sony's SVR-S500 is an excellent, if slightly expensive, 80GB PVR that features a pair of integrated TV tuners for simultaneous watching and recording. If you can ignore some functionality flaws then recording and playback performance is outstanding

Sleek styling ; Dual TV tuners ; Decent digital images ; Excellent recording performance across all quality modes

Sparse connectivity ; No CI card slot ; Frustrating usability

Recordings using the standard (SP) mode are extremely accurate to the original, although the odd digital artefact does occasionally rear its head. Aside from a touch more shimmer around edges, the lower quality (LP) mode shows very little...

Completely unreliable

Ours has just packed up again. One replacement, one reconfigure and now broken completely. Unfortunately now out of guarantee. Will defintitely not buy a Sony one to replace. Didn't buy on Amazon - should have and checked the reviews first!

Sony

Great little system, the instructions are rather complex and seems to have lost a bit in translation, generaly a good little system. Only bad point is that you can not record SKY tv, or TNT if you are in France, if it could then would be superb

Well, it did power up at least.

Anyone from Sony reading this should be ashamed to have been involved with this product, it's total rubbish. How this got out the factory door, I'll never know. I bought this two months ago and almost from the get-go, it failed to live up to the badge....

Clearly the sony ugly duckling

As stated previously, the unit is ridiculously noisy, unresponsive, and not user friendly at all. Steer clear at all costs!
