Sony BDP-S760

The Sony BDP-S760 is a high-end Blu-ray player aimed squarely at movie buffs and discerning audiophiles.

Superb 1080p picture quality, 7.1ch analog audio, built-in Wi-Fi, surround sound headphone jack, user-friendly interface

Light on multimedia features, doesn't look 'high-end' enough

When we started up a Blu-ray disc, the Sony BDP-S760 took around 45 seconds to reach the main menu, which is pretty lethargic by today's standards. Ejecting discs also elicited an annoying 10 second pause

Panasonic DMR-BW750

Much like animals, some Blu-ray devices are more equal than others. The Panasonic DMR-BW750 Blu-ray recorder is the latest superior model to €˜hog€™ the BD limelight; boasting a 250GB inbuilt hard drive, twin HD digital tuners and H.264 video ...

Exceptional image quality, plenty of inbuilt features and storage space, inbuilt dual HD digital tuner

Sluggish load times, confounding remote control

The Panasonic DMR-BW750€™s main trump card is its 250GB internal hard drive, which can be used for recording and time-shifting digital television from the dual high-definition TV tuners. Naturally, you can also write HD content to Blu-ray disc; ...

LG BD390

The LG BD390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player is a BD player with a difference -- integrated wireless networking, no less. Having beaten Sony€™s impending suite of next-gen offerings to the post, it€™s officially the first Blu-ray player to boast built-in ...

Integrated Wi-Fi, superb BD image quality, good DVD upscaling, fast load times

Expensive, remote control could be better

If you can overlook its questionable price tag, the LG BD390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player is one of the better options on the market. No other Blu-ray player currently offers the same breadth of features. Shame about the remote control though.

Panasonic DMP-B15

The Panasonic DMP-B15 is the world's first portable Blu-ray player. It combines an 8.9in LCD screen and a BD optical drive in a (semi) portable package. It also doubles as a player for the home, complete with YouTube functionality and BD-Live support ...

Versatile design, bundled car accessories, can be used as a regular Blu-ray player

Expensive, short battery life, 1024x600 screen resolution, bulkier than most portable DVD players

Ironically, the Panasonic DMP-B15 works better as an in-house Blu-ray player than a portable one. While there are things to like about the DMP-B15, the device is simply too expensive to overlook its flaws.

Samsung BD-P1600

Samsung BD-P1600

By Campbell Simpson

Excellent image quality with both Blu-ray discs and DVDs, high-definition audio decoding, good operational speed

Build quality could be better, flip-down front is annoying

Samsung's BD-P1600 does everything you could want a Blu-ray player to do. Great picture quality, plenty of audio decoding support and a speedy interface combine to make it an easy choice. Our only concerns (the build quality and the design) are minor.

Panasonic DMP-BD60

Excellent image quality, sleek and attractive design, lots of useful inbuilt features

Unhelpful on-screen displays

On all counts, the Panasonic DMP-BD60 is a well-made Blu-ray player, and it ranks among the best Blu-ray players you can buy today. Highly recommended.

LG BD370

LG BD370

By David Ramli

Excellent DVD upscaling, very good Blu-ray picture quality, can connect to YouTube, can play and display media from USB 2.0 thumb drives, BD-Live capable

No 7.1-channel analog outputs

The LG BD370 Blu-ray player is an excellent entry-level option. The very good DVD upscaling, Blu-ray movie picture quality, BD-Live connectivity and USB playback already make it worth the price tag, but the ability to connect to YouTube makes this one ...

Sony BDP-S350

Sony BDP-S350

By Chris Jager

Great performance for the asking price, attractive & compact design, comparatively fast load times, user-friendly interface

Poorly designed USB port, analog outputs limited to 2-channel

If you'd prefer not to spend a fortune on a Blu-ray player, but still want the quality-assurance that comes from the Sony brand, then the BDP-S350 is a top-quality choice.

Sony BDP-S550

Sony BDP-S550

By David Ramli

Excellent Blu-ray image quality, 7.1-channel analog output, BD-Live ready

USB port can't be used for playing media, DVD upscaling makes edges fuzzy

The Sony BDP-S550 is a good product but its relatively high cost means that unless you need the 7.1-channel analog output the competition offers better value.

TOSHIBA SD-260E

Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY

By David Ramli

Very good at upscaling DVDs

Only half the price of an entry-level Blu-ray player with built-in DVD upscaler, no analog 7.1-channel audio outputs

The Toshiba XD-E500-K-TY provides excellent DVD upscaling for high-definition TVs. However, make sure you're certain that you don't want to fork out a bit more for a Blu-ray player instead.
