Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray Disc Player

BonusView Blu-ray player responds speedily, but that doesn't make up for disappointing image and sound.

Fast response time ; SD Card slot for AVCHD playback

Image and audio quality mediocre

Sadly, extras like these don't make up for this model's relatively lackluster image and sound quality

Blockbuster Movie Gear

One characteristic you're unlikely to see associated with the first generation of Blu-ray disc (BD) players is speed. Some players that I've tested have taken more than 2 minutes to load a relatively recent Blu-ray movie release, and that was after I...

Speediest disc load time of standalone BD players we've tested. Fast and easy multimedia browsing. Bitstream audio output with lossless audio formats. Custom picture controls.

Lacks network connection.

The Panasonic DMP-BD30 loads discs faster than other standalone BD players while delivering impressive picture quality.

Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray Player - Full Review

Without a doubt, the BD30 is a definite step in the right direction for Blu-ray players. It offers state of the art playback performance from Blu-ray software and piece of mind with its support of the upcoming 1.1 profile. But this player isn’t for...

Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray Player

Like most HD players on the market, the Panasonic DMP-BD30 delivers poor standard DVD playback that is not indicative of its price point. While I was more than happy with its Blu-ray playback capabilities, I would still suggest looking elsewhere for...

Panasonic DMP-BD30K review: Panasonic DMP-BD30K

Editors' note, October 1, 2008: This 2007 product has been replaced by the Panasonic DMP-BD35 , which offers more features at a better price.

Excellent picture quality on Blu-ray discs; 1080p output at 24 frames per second; DVD upconversion up to 1080p; HDMI 1.3b output; can output Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in bitstream format; first Blu-ray Profile 1.1 player; SD card slot can...

No built-in decoding for high-resolution audio formats; no Ethernet jack for firmware upgrades or future interactive content.

The Panasonic DMP-BD30 offers excellent video quality and is Blu-ray Profile 1.1 compliant, but those who want high-resolution audio will need a cutting-edge AV receiver.

Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray Player Reviewed

The $499.95 Panasonic DMP-BD30 was one of the first Profile 1.1 players to hit the market in late 2007. The Profile 1.1 designation means it contains the secondary audio and video decoders needed for picture-in-picture playback. However, it does not......

Panasonic DMP-BD30K Blu-ray Disc Player

After living with Panasonic's latest Blu-ray Disc player for a few weeks, we've only grown more attached to it. This is one solid high definition player, for a very affordable price.

Our first impressions of the DMP-BD30 haven't changed much over time - the player gets it right where it matters - in the reproduction of high quality color-rich 1080p images, and in its ability to pass next generation lossless audio surround...

Panasonic DMP-BD30 Blu-ray Player

Now that the Blu-ray format has been available for a year and a half, we're starting to see lots of second- and third-generation players with enhanced functionality and reduced prices. Among them is the DMP-BD30, Panasonic's second-gen model with many...

The DMP-BD30 represents a significant improvement over Panasonic’s previous Blu-ray player, and it’s less expensive to boot. I’m bummed that it doesn’t play DVD-Audio, and I don’t care much for the menu system, but otherwise, it’s a superb Blu-ray...

Product Specifications

Blu-ray means incredible Full-HD images, breathtaking sound and 5x the data capacity of DVDs. Now Blu-ray means something else too: an entirely new movie-viewing experience, made possible by Final Standard Profile, which adds features never seen before, like four Picture-in-Picture modes including Enhanced Commentary (from directors and actors), Backstage Pass, Peek Behind the Animation and Audio Mixing. Combining a PHL Reference Chroma Processor with advanced P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing) imaging technology, UniPhier - the Precise Digital Video processor - reproduces crisp, natural colors that are extremely faithful to the original movie. It does this by up-sampling the color information in decoded video signals, while the super high-speed P4HD up-converts content recorded in 480i/p, 720p or 1080i format to 1080p by correctly generating each pixel according to information drawn from up to 60 surrounding pixels. The image motion of each pixel is then categorized into one of 16 levels, from stationary to super fast. Image quality is further enhanced by Diagonal Processing, which creates smooth, sharp diagonal lines, and 3:2 Pull-Down, which optimizes the processing accordingly for film or video making the images look natural and lifelike. In addition, the DMP-BD30's HDMI output is Deep Color compatible, with 4,096 steps of gradation for even smoother, finer-quality images that meet Hollywood's stringent demands, so you can experience movies just the way they were meant to be experienced. With Precise Digital Audio, Blu-ray's beautiful images are complemented by exceptionally pure, accurate sound thanks to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. UniPhier's advanced processing capability decodes these audio signals with high precision and outputs them in bitstream form with no degradation. It also brings re-mastering to Blu-ray for the first time, which compensates for data lost during the compression process creating a fuller, richer sound. The convenient SD card slot on the DMP-BD30 allows easy viewing of high-definition videos and photos on your HDTV. Videos shot with a Panasonic HD camcorder are output in their original 1920 x 1080 resolution, while still images taken with a Panasonic Lumix digital camera are up-converted and output in 1920 x 1080 resolution. With EZ Sync HDAVI Control, you can control your Blu-ray Disc player - and all your home theater components - with your TV's remote. Simply press the EZ Sync button and select "BD Player" on the menu screen; the BD player's menu will be displayed and you can begin playback.
