Good stuff.

I purchased this unit to replace the infamous JVC XV-501BK. I couldn't be happier with this unit. It performs all of the functions quite well, and it has superb audio/visual clarity.

Excellent sound and picture quality, Panasonic reliability, built-in decoding.

No CD-R playback, sound switching on menus(see review)

Panasonic DVD-RV80 Player

It has taken me until now (Dec 2000) to enter the DVD market and the time spent in comparison and research which led me to the Panasonic DVD-RV80 has been proven well worth it. The RV80 was selected mostly based on picture quality claims and...

Picture quality, picture quality, reasonably priced.

Remote could have better design.

The Best Value for the Money...

I am quite picky when it comes to the home electronics. I went through 8 receivers, for example, until I settled on Harmon Kardon AVR80 MKII. The same was true with the DVD Player. I wanted the best non-progressive DVD player with the built in Dolby...

Excellent picture and sound quality, nice finish

Does not play CD-R's, but who cares...

A very good player, well worth the price.

I looked into several DVD players to replace my useless JVC 501BK. (you know, that notorious $400 paperweight)

Picture quality, sound quality, size, features, ease of setup, ease of use, cinema mode.

Remote sucks big time, sound switching too slow, poor error correction.

Panasonic DVD RV80. Is my first DVD player, went through a lot of research on lots of other players. The RV80 provides the features I wanted most: DD & DTS Built in decoders, Component outputs, and 5.1 audio and video oversampling. The aspect of only...

Product Specifications

The DVD-RV80 is Panasonic's best standard (non-progressive scan) DVD player for the 2000 model year. Its chief claim to fame is a set of component video outputs, which provide the best-quality connection to similarly equipped TVs. On the minus side, the RV80 does not play CD-R discs. A video noise reduction circuit is present to reduce interference inherent to poor-quality DVD transfers. There's also a gamma correction feature that enables you to adjust dark-to-light gradation; it's also supposed to make details in dark scenes visible. Another tweak is called Cinema mode, which combines a brightness control with picture noise canceling to give you an improved picture under certain viewing conditions. The RV80 incorporates a 54-MHz video processor, whereas most players use a 27-MHz device; the RV80's processor is said to improve picture quality. On the audio side, the RV80 has a built-in Dolby Digital/DTS decoder. That means you can connect this DVD player to a Dolby Digital-ready A/V receiver; the dual decoder is also useful if you have an A/V receiver that decodes Dolby Digital only and has the analog inputs for an external DTS decoder. Simulated surround sound can be achieve through the headphone jack as well as via the standard audio outputs - in case you don't yet have a surround setup. The headphone jack has a volume control. The RV80 also provides both optical and coaxial digital outputs. The player's remote control is basic. Finally, the remote's menu keys are backlit.
