Panasonic DVD-S53 DVD Player Review

This is a unit with fast response time and that we could make it region free. But unless you are looking for a player that can play both Divx and MPEG4 files we think that there are products that provide a better cost/benefit ratio on the market.

Panasonic DVD-S53 DVD Player Review

Our complete review of Panasonic DVD-S53, a DVD player with HDMI output and capable of playing Divx and MPEG4 files.

Fast to turn on, fast to load movies, fast to start playing movies ; Fast response to commands like previous/next chapter and scan backwards/forward ; Plays Divx and MPEG4 files with outstanding quality ; We could make it region free (even though you...

Remote control can’t control other devices, especially TV sets ; Doesn’t have an optical SPDIF output ; Display shows the current chapter being played, not the running time ; Proved to be incompatible with recordable dual-layer media ; Unit doesn’t...

Panasonic DVD-S53S/K Review and Prices

Considering an upscaling DVD player like the Panasonic DVD-S53 retails for substantially less than either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player, it can be a solid compromise for consumers who don't want to commit to one of the new high definition formats until a...

HDMI connection, upscaling to 720p, 1080i or 1080p resolution, plenty of picture and audio control options, DivX compatible

No USB port, no HDMI cable included

Panasonic pulls out all the stops

Top-notch pictures ; Attractive design ; Good blacks

Untidy user interface ; No USB port

Panasonic DVD-S53

Compared to its rivals, Panasonic's DVD-S53 looks an absolute steal and there aren't many 1080p budget players - but cutting costs leads to inevitable compromises.

Competitive price; multi-disc compatibility; good price to performance ratio

Average build and features; picture flaws compared to more expensive models

Love the data DVD option

Nice picture. Data DVD option is terrific and much more convenient to view dgital movie clips as no encoding is necessary on the computer first. Just burn files to DVD

Panasonic DVD-S53K 1080p Up-Converting DVD Player Black

Have not hooked it up yet via hdmi. Will soon.

Looks good, plays everything I throw at it. Hooked up to my 500 gig external, allows me to play all my downloaded xvid movies right into it

Remote, and its a little slow when hooked up to a hardrive

As good as the First

This device really has made me re-consider ever buying a Blu ray player, until I'm forced to upgrade I won't. I'm perfectly happy with this unit's up-converting ability.

Read my previous review, this one was every bit as good as my first one with the one bonus of this one I ordered from Newegg and it got here muy pronto

The remote control keeps it from getting 5 stars, too bad it's so hard to read the buttons on it. You'll need to have a light on to see the thing, not ideal while watching a movie

I'm Ordering a Second

Overall probably the best DVD player I've ever owned. I only rated it 4 stars because I guess there's always room for improvement. Having watched my older DVD titles upscaled I'm in NO hurry to buy a Blu-Ray anytime soon. Oh yeah, and Newegg Rocks!

This thing plays almost everything I've put into it. Home made DVD's, DVD's burned to either -/+ RW media, discs that my other DVD players won't read. It impresses me all the time at what it'll read and play ; Up-scaling is amazing also, I've found...

Manual certainly could use work. Luckily I'd rather learn the hard way and not read so not a real issue for me but for some folks, good luck finding out what you want in that thing

Panasonic DVD

So far, so good. The picture looks great on the 50 in Panasonic plasma with my old DVDs. Buy the HDMI cable for the best picture possible. Free as part of a combo deal on the plasma (which I love)

None to speak of. Came with an RCA video and audio cable

Product Specifications

The DVD-S53K features a 1080p up-conversion function that converts standard definition (720 x 480 pixels) images from DVD sources to high definition (1920 x 1080 pixels) images. These up-converted signals draw out the maximum performance of an HDMI-compatible 1080p HDTV, giving you vivid, sharp and exceptionally detailed HD resolution images. And unlike ordinary video up-converters that produce images with thicker edges and decreased sharpness, the HD Enhancer keeps the edges sharp while correcting other parts of the image to produce clear, crisp pictures with outstanding detail. EZ Sync HDAVI Control, which lets you operate all of your home theater components by pressing a single button, is now more convenient than ever. Panasonic models with EZ Sync HDAVI Control (HDAVI Control II) also feature the Seamless GUI (graphical user interface) function and the Surround Sound Optical Terminal Pass-Through function. Incredibly versatile and multi-format-friendly, this DVD player can play back just about any DVD or CD you can throw at it. Specifically, it can play back the following disc formats: DVD-Video, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R (including dual layer), DVD+R (including dual layer), DVD+RW, CD, CD-R/RW, WMA, MP3, JPEG, MPEG4 and DivX.
