Philips DVP5960/37

HDMI-equipped DVD players have suddenly become commonplace this year, to the point where they don't cost much more than a generic DVD player you'd pick up at Wal-Mart. The Philips DVP5960/37 is one good example, going for less than $80 online. For that...

Relatively inexpensive; HDMI upconversion to 720p, 576p, and 1080i; DivX compatibility with decent playback performance; mostly solid video quality; front USB port for digital photos and music; ultraslim styling.

Annoying shift bug causes some black bars on movies; 576p mode is close to unwatchable; no S-Video output.

The Philips DVP5960/37 HDMI-upscaling DVD player is an excellent choice for budget-conscious HDTV owners and multimedia aficionados, and its DivX playback is a nice bonus.

Philips DVP5960 DVD Player Review and Prices

We are hard-pressed to think of a budget DVD player that offers more for less than the Philips DVP5960. This single-disc unit is neatly designed, with a sleek finish and slender construction, standing just 1-1/2 inches high. It may not have the...

HDMI up-conversion of DVD, USB port, DivX-compatible, slim and stylish design

No DTS support, no S-video output, poorly designed remote control, buggy JPEG browser functions

Looks great, works great, I'm looking at getting the 5990 this time. Great player for the money.

Plays Divx files very well

file names are 8 characters, so you can't always tell what file to choose. When playing via usb and there is a lot of action or water scene it tends to skip

Nice player for the price

I've tried formatting my thumb drive several ways and I get an 'Unsupported Format" error everytime. The manual only states that it needs to be a supported format but no where does it tell you what that format is!

Inexpensive good quality DVD player

USB port doesn't recognize any of my disks

I was at Best Buy and just by chance this player caught my eye because of the thin size. It also up converts all dvds to near HD quality I can definetly tell a defference. Just make sure to have a HD tv and buy a nice hdmi cable. I wont say the price...

Upconversion all the way to 1080p is qutie nice for the price.Picture is at or near HD with HDMI hook-up. Very small and easy to access

NO DTS! I always play my movies in DTS when available but oh well Dolby is good enough for now.Kind of a crappy remote

External Hard Drive USB - WARNING

External USB works for JPEG / MP3 / WMA

External USB DOES NOT work for VIDEO

It's $70 bucks people ! !

No, I dont think its a 10, I just feel a need to sway the overall rating up some.

70, USB port, HDMI, Slim profile, great picture quality

HDMI cable can cost more than the player

It STINKS! Waste of Money!

This unit CAN NOT play back a "Packed" AVI clip. Even when you try to unpack the AVI file ... it still plays it back "JERKY" and Stutters. If you don't mind a JERKY playbcak and it does not drive you crazy like it me ... then blow your $75 and buy this...

For a DivX Capable DVD Player ... it is anything but that

This unit can not play back a "Packed" stream. Plays it back in jerky mode

A step backwards--AVOID

This unit replaced an earlier Philips unit, but it was a huge disappointment. The tray eject takes seven or eight frustrating seconds. Because it does nothing, you hit the button again. So when it finally ejects, it goes right back in. Sometimes it...

up conversion

won't recognize discs, slow to eject, dumb display
