Philips DVP5980 review

If you're not yet ready to stump up for a proper hi-def disc player then the next best thing is a DVD deck with 1080p upscaling. Just a year ago this feature was only found on high-end players, but the £80 DVP5980 proves that this is no longer the case

Imressive connectivity ; Wide range of audio modes ; Good erformance for the rice

Annoying disc search oeration

Philips DVP5980 DVD Player

If you've got a big DVD collection, Philips' DVP5980 player looks like a bargain.

Overall the DVP5980 is a great all-rounder that boasts solid 1080p picture quality and a healthy range of features for a reasonable price - but as a bonus it's also beautifully designed and equipped to handle your growing collection of digital media...

One of the UK's cheapest 1080p DVD decks offers excellent picture and sound quality plus a very handy USB port

Disappointed

I purchased my dvp3360 recently but was very disappointed to find the remote control was very un-responsive and only worked very close to the player. I sent the remote control back for a replacement which was just the same. It does however work...

A solid entry level player with great functionality

A solid entry level player with great functionality

The first thing to note about this DVD player is that it is very thin, but quite wide and deep. If you have a closed cabinet for your A/V equipment, this may be an issue, as it can be quite awkward to fit. On the positive side, it is very light, and...

Great picture quality via HDMI. Decodes Dolby 5.1 surround through my Panasonic TV and it sounds almost as good as the home theatre system I've just scrapped

Menu options are bit obscure, and when selecting them (e.g. picture settings) you have to close the menu to see what it looks like - it doesn't minmise so you can readjust without closing

The remote is a cheap and rather limited piece of equipment, but does work. No eject button on remote, but as you need to go to the unit to remove the DVD it really is not that much of a problem. The listing of files using the USB port is very limited...
