Philips DVP5982 Review and Prices

The DVP5982 is another great value DVD player from Philips that combines a host of features in a slim, inexpensive unit. This player offers upscaling to 1080p resolution, the next best thing to owning a HD DVD or Blu-ray player, but without the hefty...

Inexpensive, HDMI upscaling to 1080p, USB port for accessing digital files, DivX compatible, slim and stylish design

Poor remote control, clunky menu system, lacks optical audio output

Don't upgrade the firmware unless you have read how

After getting a TV with an HDMI input and watching only one movie on it, I decided to upgrade the firmware if for no other reason than to get it to have HDMI audio activated by default. Following the instructions to do so exactly (using two files in...

Worked great playing almost every format when burned to disk. Upconversion did appear to improve the quality. Excellent value. Newegg had fast shipping as usual

Stuttered a bit on fast action scenes when played from USB sticks and fast forward was horrible from sticks with max 3x speed. Never tried it with an HDD but had finally gotten a small drive FAT formatted to use but never got to try it. Following...

Awesome DVD Player

This is an awesome product. I think this is about the best DVD player in this price range.

Plays most DivX codes ; Able to read files from USB compatible devices ; Quick Response time ; Very attractive design ; Simple but functional remote

Would have preferred to two USB slots ; Upconverting button is annoying

Great Product

Despite the cons, for the price this product is fantastic.

Dvd's look awesome, just about every file type i've thrown at it works through the usb. Love watching tv shows and movies from my hard drive through my television instead of my computer monitor

Doesn't accept every file type and I wish there was some way for it to display seperate subtitle files with movies from my hard drive

PHILIPS DVP5982/37 1080p HDMI DivX Ultra Upconversion DVD Player

Be aware this unit does appear to know what to do with a *.MKV file So if you plan to use this file type you may be disappointed. The changing to and from different menu's appears to be slower than I am used to. Read the other reviews regarding file...

Excellent upconverting player for the price. The USB Port!! great addition, the main reason I selected this unit over others

No svideo out

Almost Perfect... if I could read the filenames!

If Philips can get their act together and update the firmware to allow me to see what the heck I'm playing, I'll give this thing 5 stars. It's a great machine, but that single error almost makes it useless to me.

Almost perfect. Reads nearly any file I throw at it. USB reads thumb drives and HDD - wow! Upgradable firmware. Great picture quality, HDMI upscale is nice. Couldn't ask for much more except - see below

CAN'T READ THE FILENAMES!!! Even with upgraded firmware can't read the names of files past 14 chars. I've got over 1000 divx files with names like Battlestar Galactica S01E04. All I see is 50 Battlestar Gal! Terrible - I'll never buy another machine...

Awesome?

Get an external Hard Drive Enclosure, and Hard Drive, partition it to FAT32 (easy with a MAC, XP won't let you over 32GB), then put all your videos on it and it will play them all thru the USB 2.0 port.

USB connectivity, Plays all the videos I throw at it, looks nice, and HDMI

Can't see picture when changing video settings, menu kinda lame

Product Specifications

Be impressed with this Philips DVD player with HDMI digital video and audio connection. Step into another home entertainment arena as you immerse yourself with High Definition video (720p / 1080i/1080p). HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and intelligently communicates the highest output resolution from the source device. It is a direct digital connection that can carry uncompressed digital HD video as well as digital multichannel audio - eliminating the conversion to analog signals so you get perfect picture and sound quality, completely free from noise. In addition, with HDMI video upconversion, you can increase the resolution of SD (Standard Definition) video signals that DVDs use to HD (High Definition) so you'll see more details and sharper, more true-to-life pictures.
