Philips DVP642

Review: Some of you may remember DIVX as a sinister plot by Circuit City and Hollywood studios to create a pay-per-view DVD business. It failed, but its spiritual opposite, DivX, is going strong. DivX is a popular video encoding and playback format...

Inexpensive; excellent overall file compatibility; slim and stylish; plays home-brewed MP3 DVDs; upgradable firmware

Rudimentary controls; subpar progressive-scan processing; occasional audio dropout; still incompatible with some DivX files; can't play DTS soundtracks

The Philips DVP642 is good choice for DivX aficionados, but everyday DVD watchers can do better for the price.
