Pioneer BDP-LX 08

The Pioneer BDP-LX 08 is a Blu-ray player, released in late 2008, that currently sells online from around 500 GBP.

Outstanding HDTV and 24p movie picture ; Excellent DVD playback ; Sleek design, tidy manufacturing ; Loads of picture controls ; HD audio as a bitstream

It may be a bit slow when it comes to loading the discs but the image quality is simply superb

Picture quality; Design; 7.1 outputs; Fine-tuning

Profile 1.1; Slow disc loading; Price

So if you only care about stunning Blu-ray pictures then the Pioneer is the videophile's choice, but those who want BD Live and quick disc loading need not apply

Pioneer's high design Blu-ray player costs £300 more than its sibling, the '51FD. Is it worth the extra outlay?

One of the best-looking and performing Blu-ray players we've seen, but not quite worth the extra premium

Unquestionable credentials, but the 'LX08's slimline design isn't enough to justify the price premium over Pioneer's cheaper Blu-ray players

Slim design ; class-leading picture and sound performance

Price ; only Profile 1.1 ; no DTS-HD Master Audio decoding upgrade until Feb/March
