Fast transfer, high image quality, many features, intuitive interface

Poor remote control design, slow channel switching

Its image quality is stellar, and its dubbing superfast. Aside from a cramped remote, there's little to complain about with this Pioneer.

Although it lacks a programming guide like that of its TiVo-powered rivals, Pioneer's slim, beginner-friendly DVR-DVD combo boasts some thoughtful features

Excellent recording quality ; Slim design ; Easy-to-use menus ; Good DVD and hard drive dubbing and backup features

No electronic programming guide or IR blaster ; No fit-to-disc or 2.5-hour recording speed

In terms of playback quality, the Pioneer DVR-520H had no trouble with our tests. Using the RGB-video output the player smoothly rendered the tricky haystacks, bridges, and rooftops in our Insurrection test, but there was some motion judder on our test...

This is a slim and appealing little DVD recorder at a very tempting price, but it's a pity that support for all types of common DVD media isn't present.
