Samsung DVD1080p8 review

Should you trust a 1080p upscaler for the price of a meal for two?

The gloss black design looks great ; Sensibly stripped-down ; Good file compatibility

No component video output ; Poor video scaling

An appealing design and price, but sadly its performance doesn't live up to expectations

Samsung DVD-1080P8

Samsung DVD-1080P8 is a high-definition DVD player manufactured and designed by Samsung. This player can only not play DVD, but it also provides a playback media for CD, CD-R, and CD-RW. It also recognises the following media formats: WMA, JPEG, MP3,...

If your HD telly is HD-ready (720p), the smart move is definitely to get a decent upscaling DVD player like the Samsung rather than making the wallet-haemorrhaging leap to Blu-ray. Very cheap and very cheerful. Samsung DVD-1080P8 is tagged with Samsung...

Samsung 1080P-9 DVD Payers

Aside from the remote quirks and learning curves that we must all go through, this device offers the enjoyment of a superior DVD player with all the tech of a small computer. If your concerned with region specifics there are mods on the internet. but I...

Plays everything I've thrown at it + or - r/rw, divx of all dates and format. Nice at 720p or 1080i/p. No blocking on a HD dvd or AVI but does not support 3D of the new a high end and priced plasma TVs that I know of. Excellent sound quality on a 5.1...

Menu order of play is random, come on Samsung put a processor that can alphabetize or put our movies in numerical order. The remote could use some standardization, separate the stop and play and FFW buttons! And how about we include a bookmark function...

Beware of incompatibilites

I like the quality of the picture when its working

This DVD player's HDMI is incompatible with at least some Toshiba TV's. I have a Toshiba 32AV502U TV. My cable box is connected via HDMI. If just one device is plugged in, each device works great. However, when both devices are connected via HDMI, the...

Very good player with a few limitations

I like this player overall, but was hoping Samsung would come out with a firmware updated to allow it to read .mkv files, and NTFS-formatted drives, and maybe to let you shut off the sleep mode so you can pause your DivX file and not have to lose your...

Outstanding upsampled DVD to 1080p quality movies look great on a large screen TV via the HDMI output. USB plug in front is handy for DivX etc. from a thumb or portable drive

Some limitations in playing back DivX etc. files; if you pause, and the unit goes to sleep mode, you lose your spot and have to ff from the beginning and find your spot. This sounds minor, but is very awkward and should be fixed, as there's no way to...

For samsung tv owners

Samsung's support site for this player describes a small number of these units (manufactured between April and June of 2008) having problems with 550 series Samsungs. This is fixed with a firmware upgrade

Incompatible with my Samsung DLP tv

When connected via HDMI to my Samsung tv the signal drops constantly while the set struggles to reacquire it. According to other reports this issue may or may not be fixed with a firmware update or a physical repair by Samsung. Component connection...

Works great!

I hooked this player up to my 26-inch Samsung LCD television using an HDMI cable and have had no problems at all. Playback is crisp and without too many stutters (with some DVDs I've experienced this but it's not a showstopper).

Worked out of the box. Slim design.

No clock. Wish it were a Blu-ray 2.0 player.

Didn't work out of the box!

Called Samsung support and the guy told me he had dealt with this same problem just the day before with another customer! I was given two options...return it to the place of purchase or send it to California for repair. Unfortunately, I didn't buy from...

Samsung's "Anynet+" feature on my TV recognized the DVD as soon as I turned on the player so it didn't need additional setup.

I got this player, connected it to my Samsung LN46A550 (1080P) with an HDMI cable, went through the setup, and started playing a movie. Thirty seconds into the movie the signal started dropping out...TV giving the "Searching for signal..." screen....
