Sony BDP-S5500 review

While streaming media is undoubtedly more convenient than physical discs, Netflix (4K or otherwise) still can't match the picture quality of Blu-ray. If you want the convenience of streaming movies but also want to watch them in the best possible...

The Sony BDP-S5500 Blu-ray player offers excellent picture quality in a compact package. Streaming media is the prime focus, and users can assemble shortcuts the way they like for the first time on a Sony player. The ability to play PlayStation Now...

Compared with a Roku, the Sony is slow to load streaming apps. There are no display or playback controls on the unit itself. The Settings menu is sluggish.

If you're looking for a streaming box that not only does Blu-ray movies but also plays games, then the Sony BDP-S5500 is an absolute bargain.

Sony BDP-S5500 Review

For mainstream users who want to consume more 3D content, the Sony BDP-S5500 offers strong value. While it doesn't have the full suite of playback options found on premium Blu-ray players, the compact unit can fit into a home theater setup with ease....

The BDP-S5500 offers 2D to 3D conversion.

The Blu-ray player has a middling boot time.

Despite its basic exterior, the Sony BDP-S5500 benefits from premium features like 3D conversion. It has the flexibility and specifications shared by top 3D Blu-ray players.

Sony BDP-S5500 review

The Sony BDP-S5500 Blu-Ray player combines the best of the S3500 and S4500 models, providing 3D Blu-Ray playback and excellent connectivity, with Wi-Fi and Smart TV functions. It's a very versatile player and highly recommended.

The Sony BDP-S5500 is the most versatile of Sony's Blu-Ray players for 2015, offering everything except for UHD (4K) upscaling, which is available on the more expensive BDP-S6500 model.

Sony BDP-S5500

The BDP-S5500 is Sony's latest mid-range Blu-ray player. It's part of a five-strong line-up that also includes the top-end BDP-S6500 (£149) and three cheaper models, the BDP-S4500 (£89), BDP-S3500 (£89) and entry-level BDP-S1500 (£75).

Generous online content ; New menu system ; Fast operation

No 4K upscaling or multiroom ; No optical output ; Lightweight build

Sony BDP-S5500 Blu-ray Player Review

A 3D capable budget Blu-ray player with smart apps and built-in WiFi. So what's the catch?

Excellent Blu-ray & DVD playback ; Good selection of apps including Amazon and Netflix ; Built-in WiFi ; Good quality sound

Build Quality is average at best

The Sony BDP-S5500 Blu-ray player is built to a price point and you can see that in the size of the unit with no display on the front and a lack of on-player controls. It is also built of plastic and is light weight so lacks a feeling of solidity....
