Sony LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak review: Sony LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak

Sony LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak

Streams live TV to any PC or PSP with broadband access; built-in wireless; works with any video source, including DVRs and TiVos; relatively simple setup.

More expensive than Slingbox; monopolizes the attached device; may not have necessary IR codes to fully operate your cable box or video device.

The Sony LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak isn't quite on a par with the Slingbox, but it is the only device that streams video to your PSP--and it's getting better with each firmware upgrade.

Internet streaming from the home entertainment kings

Watch your TV anywhere via the internet ; Remote schedule recordings ; Works with the PSP

Relatively poor visuals

If you're that desperate to watch a little TV this at least works well

Sony's answer to the Slingbox works with PSPs, but lacks an internal TV tuner and is more expensive than its rival

Sony LocationFree

Just when you were getting your head around the distinctly sci-fi concept of timeshifting used by personal video recorders, some bright spark came up with the idea of placeshifting.

If you've got a PSP and like the sleek styling of the Sony, you'll probably prefer LocationFree, despite its higher price tag. On balance, however, we felt the Slingbox's more open approach offered greater charms.

Sony LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak review

Place-shifting TV is one of the new hot buzzwords in tech land, and Sony's LF-PK1 LocationFree Player Pak, which allows you to wirelessly stream live TV to your PC or PSP handheld game console, is Sony's answer to Sling Media's well-received Slingbox ....

Streams live TV to any PC or PSP with broadband access; built-in wireless; works with any video source, including DVRs and TiVos; relatively simple setup.

More expensive than Slingbox; monopolizes the attached device; may not have necessary IR codes to fully operate your cable box or video device.
