Sony RDR-HX510S

When combined hard disk and DVD recorders first appeared they struggled to convince people they represented good value for money. But with prices dropping, consumers are starting to realise that such products aren't merely aspirational. In fact,...

If there's one quibble we have about the RDR-HX510S it's the price - you can buy cheaper models with equivalent specifications. However, we can appreciate that the Sony is a very high-quality model offering plenty of features. And it's an absolute...

The perfect companion for that sexy new LCD screen you persuaded the missus you need? No it's not a comfy sofa and a pint but the latest in DVDR / HDD combination from Sony.

Ease of use

Used only 6 times in 14 months before it suffrered total 'hard disk failure ; According to Sony this is 'not exceptional' and refused to accept liability

If this is acceptable quality by Sony's definition don't buy Sony

Sony RDR-HX510

Easy to set up and use. Menus are very user friendly and system intuitive. 80Gb is perfectly adequate for storing lots of films and other programmes to watch and delete or to dub to DVD.

System slow to power up. When opening DVD drawer the system will not let you do anything else until the drawer is shut again which can be a little frustrating/time-wasting but is perfectlly livable with.

Sony RDR-HX510

The sony RDRHX510S DVDR has good editing features that makes life easier when piecing together a series of programmes recorded. It is easy on the eye as it seems slimmer than most dvd recorders.

There is no direct link from a digital camera like a usb socket.

easy to use, loads of useful features. nice to be able to watch what you are recording before it is even finished or play and record at the same time.

The hard drive is well worth having. On-screen menus are easy to use. This was our first DVD after a video and it is so much ebetter and easier. it was not a problem to transfer videos.

It takes time to set up, especially checking tuning for getting best reception stations, but worth the effort. For some reason it does nort always record from the satellite channel (Line 3) when this is set on Autoview for chosen programme.
