Toshiba HD-E1 HD-DVD Player (1080i)

While there is no clear winner in the home high-definition optical storage feud yet, Toshiba has reaffirmed its direction with the release of the HD-E1, an affordable HD-DVD player for your next home entertainment revamp.

Toshiba HD-E1

Toshiba's HD-E1 is the first HD-DVD player we've had through the office. While we looked at the Qosmio G30 notebook with a built in HD-DVD drive, the ...

Brilliant image quality, great DVD upscaling, online capabilities in the future, competitively priced

Slow interface, no 1080p support

While it is missing 1080p support and has a somewhat sluggish interface, the HD-E1 is a well priced High Definition player that supports both DVD and HD-DVD, and outputs exceptional image quality.

Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD Player

Toshiba throws the cat among the pigeons with a surprisingly affordable HD DVD player.

Toshiba has really raised the bar with the HD-E1, producing a high quality HD DVD player at a very affordable price. Although £350 is a lot of money to many people, considering that a Blu-ray player will cost you well over twice as much, the HD-E1 is a...

The cheapest standalone next-gen disc player

Cheaper than Blu-ray ; Great picture quality

No 5.1 analogue outputs ; Poor remote

This HD DVD player couples an eye-opening price with some great pictures, making it a serious player in this new market

Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player

2007 is going to be the year of high definition, or so we are told, and with that, Toshiba has finally waded in with two players in the UK that are capable of playing back its next generation HD DVD discs. In an attempt to bring the price down, Toshiba...

Picture quality, styling, playback standard DVDs

Format war question, no 1080p playback

In an attempt to bring the price down, Toshiba has cut some corners, mainly the lack of 1080p output support, however for most users this won't be a problem and means that you can get a piece of the next generation DVD action without having to break...

Toshiba HD-E1

If you have a big-screen TV in your living and you're hungry for HD content, the Toshiba HD-E1 delivers great picture quality.

USB and Ethernet for expansion. Currently cheaper than Blu-ray players. HD DVD movies look great on HD-ready TVs. Upscaled regular DVDs well.

No support for 1080p "full HD". No analog 5.1-channel audio. Remote control not backlit. Some performance issues. Locked to Region 4 for DVD.

If you have a big-screen TV in your living and you're hungry for HD content, the Toshiba HD-E1 delivers great picture quality. It's a cheaper alternative to the Blu-ray players we've seen, but we had some minor performance issues.

Toshiba HD-E1

Flying in the face of current inflationary trends Toshiba's entry-level HD DVD deck has recently had its price cut. A step-up model which adds 1080p output to the HD-E1 will soon be on sale for £450

Cheaper than Blu-ray, Great picture quality

No 5.1 analogue outputs, Poor remote

This HD DVD player couples an eye-opening price with some great pictures, making it a serious player in this new market

Toshiba HD-E1

SmartHouse takes the Toshiba HD DVD player HD-E1 for a spin, but wonders if the stunning hi-def prowess of HD DVD makes up for a lack of features.

HD image quality ; fast loading times ; nice design

Video judder on some discs

An extremely capable entry-level high-definition player

Review: Toshiba HD-E1 HD DVD player

The UK's first HD DVD player is finally here. We had a look to see how it measures up to its big Blu-ray rival...

Good value, generally fine picture quality and superb DVD upscaling

Lacks full-range outputs for HD audio, disc quality is variable and the format war is far from over

HDMI is also used by the HD-E1 to output HD DVD images or to upscale normal DVD to 720p or 1080i levels. The relatively stripped down player also supports CD playback but little else (no SACD, DVD-Audio, MP3 or DivX) and of course it won't play Blu-ray...
