Another unique feature is the ability to set the recording bit rate. There are five record modes: SP (4.6 megabits per second, which allows two hours of recording on a 4.7-GB DVD and nearly 36 hours on the hard drive), LP (2.2 Mbps; four hours on a...

Toshiba RD-XS32 HDD/DVD Recorder Reviewed

If we were to lay the DVD evolutionary chart on top of the human evolutionary chart, we're currently two or three guys in from the right. DVD has come a long way, and it continues to penetrate mediums and platforms......

Toshiba RD-XS32

With an 80GB HDD as well as a DVD recorder, the Toshiba RD-XS32 is a very handy addition to any family that wants to record (and store) home movies and TV shows.

Allows play back of recordings at various speeds ; 80GB hard disk drive ; Picture-in-picture (PIP) viewing

No digital video connection such as DVI or HDMI ; Cannot record onto +R media

However, having a hard disk drive in combination with a DVD recorder makes Toshiba's RS-XS32 an alluring unit to have in your living room. The 80GB drive provides enough space to record over 100 hours at the lowest quality setting. Favourite shows can...

Toshiba - RD-XS32

If the DVD Recorder sounded the death knell of the VCR, then the DVD-R/HDD combination has all but buried it and paid for the headstone, offering the choice of recording directly to DVD or storing programmes ...

Toshiba's RD-XS32 is a well built, well featured player. It may be a complex unit but it performs well. On the downside, the hard drive may seem small compared to some of the opposition. As with all DVD-R/HDD DVD recorders it pays to shop around to get...

Product Specifications

The RD-XS32's 80GB Hard Disc Drive (HDD), similar to what is used in a personal computer, can store recorded broadcast programming and dubbed content. The RD-XS32 will allow high-speed dubbing from the HDD to a DVD-RAM, DVD-R or DVD-RW without any deterioration of the digital MPEG-2 signal and provides instant access to recorded programs. So forget about searching for blank videotape when you want to record, simply hit RECORD and let the HDD do all the work. Toshiba Multi-Drive DVD recorders are multi-format DVD recorders designed to provide the greatest flexibility in recording and playback by supporting DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and DVD-RW recordable disc formats. ColorStream Pro Component Video Outputs allow the highest quality video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component video equipped progressive scan TV. When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts-like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker-are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity. Digital Cinema Progressive (3/2 Pulldown) delivers the smoothest, most film-like images to any progressive scan television, such as an HD-compatible one, and ensures maximum resolution. Auto Title/Chapter/Thumbnail Creation - recorded content remains easy to find with the help of a menu that will be automatically created when you record. It displays the date and channel you recorded, along with a thumbnail of your recording by capturing the first video frame of the recording. The date and channel can be change to any 64-character title and the thumbnails to any image within the recording. Chapters within the recording can also be created by either predetermined intervals, or by the user selecting specific points within the recording. These chapters can also be named and assigned a specific thumbnail from any video frame within the chapter. Recordable Compact Discs (CD-R & CD-RW) with music stored in either the Windows Media Audio or MP3 file formats can be enjoyed. EASY NAVI Menu - an entry menu portal that provides quick and easy access to key features of the DVD recorder, such as Timer Recording or DV Capture. Additionally the EASY NAVI displays a "live action window", providing feedback to the user on the current status of the recorder, whether it is recording a program, in the Time Slip mode, or playing back content with DVD-RAM or HDD. Time Slip/Pause Live TV feature allows the user to begin watching a recording that is already in progress. A Time Slip feature lets you 'pause' a live recording and then return to it later. During playback of both modes, a bar graph can be displayed on-screen depicting the 'progress' or location of the playback signal with regards to the real time recorded signal. There are composite audio & video inputs, as well as RCA L/R inputs on the front panel of the unit for easy camcorder dubbing. Additionally, an IEEE1394 'FireWire' jack is also available on the front panel for interfacing compatible digital video camcorders. Provides automatic recognition of the device and on-screen menu controls to easily direct the "downloading" process with the recorder's remote control. IR Blaster for Cable and DBS Box Control handy cable can connect to the back of the recorder and transmits an infrared (IR) signal to change channels on your cable or satellite box. Allows no-hassle recordings from these two sources without the need to make channel selection ahead of time. The unit features a 181-channel cable compatible tuner and a 2-month, 32-event timer programming functionality. Users may input their own program data, or take advantage of the built-in Gemstar VCR+ technology for simple timer event programming.
