Toshiba XD-E500

HDTV owners should experience the enhanced picture and sound quality of Blu-ray, but not all of them are ready to make the jump to a high-def disc player when traditional DVD is still perceived as good enough. Toshiba's XD-E500 DVD player ($149.99...

Energy efficient. 1080p24 output

Picture suffers a loss of detail with HDMI output. Default picture settings cause Sharpening artifacts. Overly softened image quality when displaying JPEG files. Low-resolution menus

If you don't want to spring for Blu-ray, there are plenty of upconverting DVD players to choose from, but the Toshiba XD-E500 is one to avoid.

Toshiba XD-E500 DVD Player - Benchmark

I can remember a time when Toshiba offered entry level DVD players and also high dollar flagship models like the SD-9200. As DVD players became a commodity Toshiba logically focused on mainstream consumer players much like the XD-E500 reviewed...

The Toshiba XD-E500 is an exceptionally good low cost up-converting DVD player when used via HDMI and it received a perfect score under the HDMI section of the Secrets benchmark. In stark contrast was its de-interlacing performance using component...

Toshiba XD-E500

When Toshiba finally pulled the plug on HD DVD , nobody was quite sure what the next step for the company was going to be. Would it go back to making DVD players, or would it forget the tensions of the format war and release a Blu-ray player ? Well,...

Solid DVD playback performance with extended definition (XDE) disabled; can play DivX, MP3, and WMA files burned on CDs and DVDs; can output DVD in 24 frames per second.

Expensive for a DVD player; XDE picture controls are best left off for the most-accurate picture; lacks features such as SACD playback and a USB port found on competing Oppo models; poor aspect ratio control on nonanamorphic DVDs.

The Toshiba XD-E500's XDE picture enhancements don't live up to the hype. While it's a solid upscaling DVD player, its high price makes it a hard sell.

Toshiba XD-E500

Just when I thought that I would probably never review a DVD player gain, Toshiba introduced their new XD-E500 1080p up conversion DVD player. Toshiba, who was one of the co-inventor's DVD technology, and also the creator of the now defunct...

Great picture quality; 24-frames per second mode; very affordable

Does not replace a Blu-ray player; XDE technology works ; but is not necessary

the XD-E500 is hard to pass up as it offers superior image quality at a very reasonable price.

Toshiba XD-E500

Toshiba dropped its support for HD DVD nearly a year ago, grudgingly conceding that BD is the de facto high-def optical disc format in much of the world. Still, the company hasn't exactly embraced Sony's format quite yet.

The difference between the XD-E500 and the BD-P1500 was most noticeable around the letters of the opening credits and the edges of stop-motion animated objects. The live-action DVD and BD versions of “X-Men: The Last Stand” looked extremely...

"Worked fine the first 5 months"

i guess i'll get the extended warranty next time I buy a DVD player. I've had this one and a Samsung that only worked a few days.

good picture, easy to use

died after 5 months. Toshiba "support" had the same problems described as in the manual and no place to enter any new problems. did the "contact us" ; never received an answer. this is big contrast to the support we've had with my son's laptop.

"Disposable piece of junk."

Toshiba USED to make great products. I have installed hundreds of Toshiba CD drives and still have some running that are over 10 years old. This DVD drive had a 90 day warranty and died after 5 months. Toshiba and I are done...

Cheap, easy to set up.

Died after 5 months. No support from Toshiba. They suggested I buy a new one. WHAT NERVE!
