Archos 70b

The $179 price is appealing--and we dig the kickstand--but the Archos 70b simply isn't fast enough and doesn't last long enough on a charge.

Click to EnlargeAmazon is currently selling the Archos 70b for $179 and, at this price, it seems tempting. However, there are a number of flaws that keep us from recommending this device. The most glaring deficiencies are the maddeningly sluggish...

Archos 70b review

The Archos 70b is a middle-of-the-road Honeycomb tablet with a design that hardly sets our hearts alight. But, the small form-factor (and price) is enticing

Android Honeycomb 3.2 ; Solid build quality ; Built-in kickstand

Performance not exceptional ; Tinny speakers ; Average aesthetics

The diminuitive Archos 70b internet tablet is a mixed bag. We appreciated the look and feel of the device, as well as the Android Honeycomb operating system and battery life. But we just couldn’t stop ourselves being slightly underwhelmed by the...

Archos 70b eReader review

The Archos 70b eReader cuts a line somewhere between an ebook reader and a tablet. Archos have released a number of Android devices in recent years and this latest addition offers up a 7-inch resistive display and a couple of features specifically with...

Adobe certification lets you access your protected EPUB files, SD card slot, affordable

Construction, build quality, screen isn't great, limited Android application, the screen could have been a better aspect for reading, Wi-Fi wasn't entirely stable

The build and materials leave a lot to be desired and the screen isn’t the greatest by a long shot. But the Archos 70b sort of succeeds in being a jack of all trades: it masters none, but we can see that it’s skill set will appeal to some at this price

Archos 70b eReader

A cheap ereader-tablet hybrid, the Archos 70b might be a compromise too far.

Good video codec support ; Low price ; Accepts SD cards

Slow file transfer ; Poor viewing angles ; No Android Market

At 13mm thick, it's significantly thicker than the latest Kindle - which is just 8.51mm thick - but it's no thicker than the average well-designed Android tablet. It's also heavier than a Kindle 3, at 370g against 247g. Archos claims the 70B lasts for...

Archos 70b eReader review

Both tablets and black-and-white e-readers are selling like hot cakes. With the 70b, Archos has tried to combine the two - it's an Android slate with a resistive colour touchscreen, so it's also ideal for watching movies.

With a resistive touchscreen, a cut-down version of Android and a slow processor, the 70b ereader is a master of no trade, but it is cheap.

Archos 70b eReader

Although it's taken some convincing to get book lovers onside, eReaders like the Amazon Kindle have proved a massive success over the past couple of years. With the introduction of the tablet, however, this tiny gadgets need to do a lot more to impress...

The colour screen on the Archos 70b eReader may be better for flicking through photographs then, but apart from that it brings nothing to the party. We'd rather have a traditional e-ink eReader, with a much longer battery life and quick responses. If...

Great but big drawback...

Lovely solid built device - fits in the palm of the hand perfectly and feels well built. It was quick to load and fairly quick to function.
