The Kobo Glo HD offers a smooth, simple e-reader experience (review)

The Kobo Glo HD melds great design and good pricing, but it's up against some stiff competition in a crowded market.

The Kobo Glo HD is sleek and compact, with a nice fit and feel in the hand. Its user-friendly interface, clean crisp screen with comfortably even lighting, and font customisability make reading a pleasant, uncomplicated experience.

Like most E Ink e-readers, it handles PDFs badly. In addition, its recommendation algorithms are generally quite baffling, and its store, while growing, is small compared to its direct competitors.

Though its store still has room to grow, the Kobo e-reader offers a smooth, simple and user-friendly experience at a competitive price point.

Kobo Glo HD

The Kobo Glo HD is a solid ebook reader with an unassuming, lightweight design and clear, paper-like display that ought to satisfy users looking for an affordable alternative to Amazon's Kindle Voyage.

Sharp display. Relatively affordable. Lightweight. Rubber design is good for grip.

No expandable storage. Long boot-up time from sleep.

Kobo Store and Conclusions The Kobo store has more than four million titles, plus magazines and newspapers. Barnes & Noble claims the same number, while Amazon only says "millions," plus 185,000 exclusive Kindle titles. In a random spot comparison,...

Kobo Glo HD review: This is a great e-reader for the money

If you're not an Amazon fan, the Kobo Glo HD could be the e-reader you've been searching for.

Display quality is equal to that of more-expensive e-readers ; Can open a wide variety of file formats ; Easy access to loaned library books via OverDrive ; Comfortable to hold, with a rubberized back plate that makes it slip-resistant

Build quality is not up to par ; Rubberized back plate is difficult to clean ; Had difficulty opening some content-rich files ; Murky backlight

Kobo Glo HD Review and Ratings

The Glo HD competes well with Amazon's latest Kindle Paperwhite and the top-of-the-line Voyage, in terms of price and specs. It's your best alterna-reader if you're not committed to the Amazon ecosystem.

Built-in lighting and sharp resolution ; Smaller and lighter than Kindle Paperwhite and Voyage ; Superb font controls and onscreen keyboard ; Competitive pricing ; EPub support

Cannot tap Amazon’s ecosystem, and the synergies thereof (such as Amazon Prime) ; No MicroSD slot, in contrast to other Kobos

Kobo has traditionally staked out a premium position in the e-reader world: admirable-looking technology at a premium price, along the lines of Apple’s and Sony’s strategies.

Kobo Glo HD review

I'm a big fan of not going to sleep with a headache. Or, more specifically, not going to sleep with an LCD-induced headache.

Excellent display and battery life ; Good book selection ; Consistent performance, responsive touchscreen ; Well-built

Lacks a service to rival Amazon’s all-you-can-eat Kindle Unlimited ; No expandable storage

Kobo Glo HD e-book reader

From e-books to Web content, this Kobo will make you want to read more stuff

Screen is easy on the eyes ; Choice of content ; Price is competitive

Glossy border around screen can be annoying at times

Kobo Glo HD review

Is this a Kindle Paperwhite killer?

Super-sharp screen ; Grippy back ; Good battery life

Kobo store lags behind Amazon ; Not all that pretty, is it? ; A bit slower than the top Kindles

Kobo cuts out the flashy extras to bring you one of the best ereader screens at a pretty affordable price

Kobo Glo HD review

A 300ppi E-Ink screen gives this ereader the edge

Easy to hold in one hand ; Polished OS ; Child-friendly features

No SD card slot ; Raised bezel ; Fixed lighting

The Kobo Glo HD is all about value and a great reading experience. It's easily as good as any Kindle. As well as a slightly more practical though boring design, it's also much cheaper than the high-end Kindle Voyage.

Kobo Glo HD review: This is a great e-reader for the money

The Kobo Glo HD isn't Rakuten's most recent e-reader. At the time of this review, that title belonged to the Kobo Aura One. It's not the company's least expensive e-reader, either—that would be the Kobo Touch 2.0, which we hope to review soon. The Kobo...

Kobo Glo HD Review: In Depth

Kobo Glo HD review: This Kindle Voyage rival is a solid premium ebook reader, with a light-up screen, comfortable design and all of the features you'd expect. But the Kobo store still lags behind Amazon's…

Sharp backlit screen ; Comfortable design

Kindle Store still better

For £109, the Kobo Glo HD offers a premium ebook reading experience easily matching the Kindle Voyage. The neat and tidy interface, backlit screen and comfortable reading experience all get a big thumbs up, but Kobo's online store is still second place...
