Nintendo Wii U review

Nintendo's Wii U is full of promise, but it may have launched prematurely. Longtime gamers will want to snap one up immediately, but mainstream users should wait a few months before diving in.

Innovative, comfortable controller ; Backward-compatible with last-gen Wii ; Off-screen play fundamentally changes console gaming

Incredibly short battery life on GamePad ; Slow, antiquated UI ; Confusing social functionality

Nintendo promised consumers a modern HD gaming console, and the Wii U delivers on that promise ... in some respects. Games look gorgeous (HD Mario!); the risky controller is another successful control innovation; and there's a ton of promise on the...

Nintendo Wii U review

Nintendo's philosophy with the Wii U is one of evolution rather than competition.

A fresh, original way to look at gaming ; GamePad means previous released best-sellers can be ported to the Wii U with a new twist ; Can play console-quality games on the GamePad without the TV ; Miiverse is a ready-made community ; Backwards...

Much of the software has been delayed ; Short battery life on GamePad ; Relatively high price compared to rivals ; Won’t play Blu-rays or DVDs, and does not have an onboard video player ; No networking abilities ; Tiny internal hard drive forces you to...

The Wii U is a difficult piece of hardware to review for two reasons. First, it is unavoidably competing with hardware that exists in a different space, and second, the entire system is betting on a future that isn’t entirely clear yet.

Wii U review: A fun system for kids, but you should probably wait for the Switch

An included tablet-style GamePad can play games when the TV is in use; Nintendo has a core library of awesome exclusive titles; works with older Wii games and accessories; very kid-friendly. Access to a vault of your childhood classics. Off-TV play is...

Can't play DVDs or Blu-rays; lacks a lot of third-party games available on Xbox or PlayStation; GamePad wireless range and battery life are too short; Wii U and 3DS handheld don't share games.

The Wii U is good for Nintendo lovers and great for families, but hold out for the Switch, the Wii U's imminent successor.

Nintendo Wii U

The Wii U, Nintendo's first step into high-definition gaming, is an ambitious console that's brimming with potential, even if that potential hasn't quite been realized yet.

Ambitious design. Tons of gaming potential. Solid gaming and media feature set. TVii vastly improves the television-watching experience with guides and recommendations.

Wii U gamepad screen is resistive and resolution is low. Sluggish menu. Short gamepad battery life. No Netflix integration in TVii. Software transfer process is unnecessarily convoluted.

Nintendo Wii U review

Years after the Wii upended the gaming industry, Nintendo takes on consoles present and future

When it's used right, the GamePad is a great feature ; More portable than most consoles ; Online features are well-implemented

Clunky, cheap build quality ; Laggy interface ; GamePad's use is confusing and unclear

Nintendo Wii U review

The Nintendo Wii U continues the motion gaming that fans of the Wii are used to, while adding extra features using a new controller with its own touchscreen.

Research from VoucherCodes.co.uk claims that one in ten gamers will buy the new Wii U system within its first few days of release. A third of those questioned say they plan to buy one in the future. Should you be one of them?
