Handheld GPS Devices

The Garmin eTrex is a very basic GPS receiver that performs most of the same functions as the original eTrex (introduced about three years ago), including position fix, route tracking, and backtracking to your original position. Unfortunately, it...

Garmin eTrex 30

The Garmin eTrex 30 is the top of the line model in the new eTrex series, which brings a long-awaited update to this popular line. It offers paperless geocaching, new customization options and BirdsEye aerial imagery capability.

Bright display ; Small size ; GLONASS for improved accuracy ; Paperless geocaching capability ; BirdsEye aerial imagery and US/Canada topo compatibility ; Advanced track navigation ; Garmin custom maps capability ; Customization options (dashboards,...

Small display ; Distance to destination cycling and tracklog separation point to immature firmware

Despite some early bugs, I like the new eTrex series, and think it will be a good unit for all sorts of outdoors lovers. My quibbles with it are pretty minor, and Garmin has a good track record of fixing significant issues (although it can often take...

Garmin nuvi 40 review

The Garmin nüvi 40 is a 4.3” navigator in Garmin's new 2012 Essential series. The models in this series are meant to be basic navigators at a budget price, lower than what we've previously seen for Garmin entry-level models. Nevertheless, they do come...

No powered mount ; Cannot add a traffic receiver ; Can only hide Trip Log; cannot clear it without resorting to a hard reset ; Only includes maps of 48 states (although a version that adds Alaska, Hawaii and Canada is also available)

Highly recommended. This is without a doubt the best entry level navigator Garmin has ever released. It has a generous 4.3” wide screen along with features previously restricted to mid-range units. You can't hardly go wrong with this one.

Garmin Foretrex 401

The Garmin Foretrex 401 is a bit unusual. This wrist-mounted unit isn't a full-fledged sportswatch, nor does it have the feature set found in some of the nicer handheld GPS receivers. It's probably best suited for folks wanting to minimize the weight...

Garmin eTrex GPS receiver

The Garmin eTrex is an easy-to-use, entry-level GPS navigation device for outdoors use. The unit doesn't use maps for navigation, but its PC connectivity gives you flexibility in tracking and planning your routes on a PC.

Value for money: The Garmin eTrex is very good value for money when you are looking for an entry level GPS device. Because of its PC connectivity, it is easier to use for tasks like planning and tracking waypoints and routes than many other entry-level...
