Alpine PND-K3

If I asked you about Alpine Electronics, you'd likely automatically think high-end, in-dash car audio or maybe even in-dash GPS, but how about a portable navigation device? Probably not. Alpine's new mid-market PND-K3 ($349.95 street) shares a number...

Easy to use. Text-to-speech conversion. Excellent Bluetooth phone interface. Six-million-entry POI database. Maps include U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and U.S.V.I

No live traffic updates and no option to add the feature. Doesn't display current speed on map view. Calculated some questionable routes on my tests

Alpine's PND-K3 portable navigation device packs a lot of features for its price, but on our tests, some unexpected routes surprised us.

Alpine PND-K3

We've reviewed a couple of in-car GPS devices from Alpine Electronics, including the Alpine Blackbird and the Alpine Blackbird II , and we haven't come away particularly impressed. While offering a decent feature set, the performance was subpar and...

The Alpine PND-K3 offers a nice user interface and has text-to-speech functionality and advanced lane guidance. The in-car GPS also features integrated Bluetooth.

The K3 is expensive, and battery life is poor. We didn't always find route recalculations to be the most efficient.

With the new interface and additional navigation features, the Alpine PND-K3 is an improvement over the company's previous in-car GPS, but the expensive price tag is a turn-off, especially when you can get more for less.

Read Alpine PND-K3msn GPS

GPS devices are becoming increasingly more common by the day whether you're using it for turn by turn directions in your car or for outdoor navigation. Today we'll be taking a look at the PND-K3 with a MSN Direct subscription from Alpine USA. The...

Feature Rich ; Easy to use interface and firmware updating ; Strong car mount

Pricey ; Doesn't know when to give up on predetermined route ; Low speaker volume for bluetooth and music playback

Overall I was very pleased with this GPS, it’s packed with features, is extremely easy to use, and most importantly it’s reliable. I would have no problem relying on this device in situations where I’m either lost or unfamiliar with the area. I know...

Alpine PND-K3 Review

Not well known for their GPS products, Alpine is known for their quality car electronics. Their PND-K3 GPS is a widescreen (4.3-inch) gps that comes with US and Canada NAVTEQ maps preloaded, Bluetooth handsfree calling, with text to speech...

"I got an Alpine PND-K3 for free and I feel ripped off.."

It's great if you live somewhere devoid of any new construction in the last 5 years...

My office has been here for 3 years, and it's not in the GPS, either are half the clients I go visit.

"Horrible customer service and no map updates in 3 years"

I would not buy this unit if I was looking today. Garmin has actual map updates and they are free for life if you buy the right model. In the 3 years I have owned this model I have not found a single map update and my wife's Garmin has had 4. Her unit...

Nice screen, bluetooth is nice too

I called over a year ago looking for updates to the maps for this unit. I was told it "was in the works" a year later, Alpine still has no updates and still claim they are working on it.

Solid GPS at a Bargain Price

I have played around with all aspects of the GPS. It is fairly intuitive, but the best way to learn is just by playing and touching the screens in various places.Plugged it in to my computer and it found a software update. No problems. Installed fine.

Good screen and easy to use ; Bluetooth works fine It does seem to handle calls well. Clear and Loud enough on both ends ; Good solid routes, maps seem reasonably current. Quick sat acquisition

Battery? Doesn't seem to last that long - couple hours but havn't tested fully. Will typically have it plugged in anyway ; Routes? Not bad routes but not always the absolute best ; Some missing POI's ; Address book didnt transfer, Calls

"This is a reasonably priced and great functioning navi."

The PND-K3 comes complete with home charger and dash mount with the auto base/charging adapter. There is an optional version that can make use of the MSN service. However I went with the model that does not offer this but after updating over the web I...

Alpine also makes the Navi in our Honda and so the functions and even UI are very similar. For us this was a key selling point as we like what we have in then car and we like the PND-K3 for the same reasons

My wife wants one too

Product Specifications

The slim, lightweight PND-K3 combines remarkable ease-of-use with natural voice text-to-speech technology and superior vehicle-positioning technology. The PND-K3's slim form factor and easy-to-detach cradle system make it very convenient to store or set up the PND-K3 on the windshield or dashboard. And, despite the slim form factor, sound quality and volume level are not sacrificed. The PND-K3's built-in loud speaker allows turn-by-turn instructions, music or incoming Bluetooth phone calls to be heard loud and clear. The ability to lock in and maintain a moving car's location on the map is a big challenge for many portable navigation devices. The PND-K3's advanced vehicle-positioning system continues positioning the car's location even in areas where it's difficult to receive GPS signals, such as in tunnels or between tall city buildings. This is achieved through the simultaneous use of satellite-linked global positioning data as well as sophisticated gyro and accelerometer technology, which measures both the car's direction and speed. This highly advanced "dead reckoning" approach ensures continuous, accurate vehicle positioning for high-quality navigation performance.
