For a basic model the F430 sat nav itself is very impressive and good value for money. BUT customer support is a big let down. I first tested the F430 out on a long journey from Southampton to Birmingham (UK) and found that the pre-loaded maps were already out of date. For example: it was telling me to turn right instead of left, some roundabouts were junctions, and many of the safety cameras were showing the wrong speed limit causing the sat nav to continuously beep until I disabled that function.
Unlike other sat navs (such as the TomTom range) it does not appear to be possible to download software and map updates from the internet for the F430. The F430 user guide and Binatone Telecom web site just say to contact the helpline or retail store for updates. I contacted Binatone over a week ago and I still have not had a reply. The Binatone web site has a contact form and not much else to indicate how the F430 update process works or how much it costs.
I did an internet search for 'F430 GPS map updates' and found other customers complaining about Binatone F430 support. I did eventually find an Australian GPS update service for the G350, Z350 SB, Z430 SB sat navs only.
So, from what I've read, it appears that the only way to update the F430 sat nav is to return it to Binatone and pay to have it updated by them - and it takes around 14 days so you have no sat nav during this time. The combined cost of the F430 sat nav and the first map update makes it more expensive than buying a TomTom Start which includes a free first update as standard.
I would NOT recommend the F430 sat nav unless you don't mind having out of date maps, false safety camera alerts; or perhaps you don't mind having to keep on at customer support to get some kind of service out of them or to verify what you've read elsewhere whilst waiting for them to respond.
Other sat navs (like the TomTom Start) do cost a bit more, but it's probably worth it for the hassle free support. Don't make the same mistake as I did.
Score: 2/5 (F430 sat nav 4/5, customer support 0/5).
