Couldn't Beat the Price

This is the second eTrex Legend that I've owned. The first one died after 4 years. For much of that time, the unit sat in my swelteringly hot car. I'm surprised it lasted that long.

I got mine on sale at Newegg for $117. As far as handheld GPS units go, that is probably as cheap as they come. Depending on the number of satellites overhead, the unit's accuracy typically ranges from 7 to 20 feet. The pre-programmed, base map data is...

While the base map data is good, you'll need the optional MapSource data if you have to locate specific addresses, for example as in delivering pizzas. And, in order to download the optional MapSource data, you'll need a computer with a male serial...

GARMIN eTrex Legend GPS System

Great.........I use it for fishing and to record how far I've walked, etc. I now can tell how fast my son is driving.

I don't have a serial port on my laptop and haven't been able to find a way to load the maps.

I use this any time and every time I am hiking and it gets this directionally challenged person home every time. Use it fishing the great lakes for fun and the saved waypoints are as accurate and repeatable as the $800 GPS we have on the boat.

Limited capability but for the price it and what I bought it for it serves me wonderfully.

I have the Road maps of North America software that used to work great with it, but something happened?? and it doesn't work anymore

Very reliable, especially compared with other GPS units I've used. I generally use it for hiking and geocaching and the waypoints are easy to input. It is very accurate and the 'current location' doesn't fluctuate much like others do

the battery life with the backlight on is very short. I wish it had more memory, but it holds plenty of waypoints- just not enough downloaded maps for me :)

Great for the application

This is the second one I've owned. Great newegg price, great shipping. I use it for geocaching, backpacking, and teaching navagation to Venturing Crews at Laguna Station High Adventure Sea Base in Texas.

Serial connection is outdated. There are many more features in other units, but this one has the features I use the most.

I'd buy the same models again. I have a classroom set of 20 and they take a beating and keep on working.

Tough, rugged, and reliable. I use them with my 5th graders.

Batteries don't last very long

I am enjoying it, it has never lied or misled me. I wish I could plug it into the trucks power system to save on the expensive batteries. I am now going to have to invest in a battery charger and nicad batteries. It is a good unit for a beginner to...

It is small, portable, and when it loses the sats it will regain them within 15 to 30 secs, very good.

It needs to be compatable with the vehicle dc power system, the batteries do not last as long as advertised. The screen is too dark, in the bright sunshine in a vehicle it is hard to see the screen.

Product Specifications

With the eTrex Legend, Garmin has loaded a full base map of North and South America into one small unit. The Legend is also designed to provide precise GPS positioning using correction data obtained from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS). This product will provide position accuracy to less than three meters when receiving WAAS corrections. The base map contains lakes, rivers, cities, interstates, national and state highways, railroads and coastlines. The eTrex Legend is also equipped with additional memory totaling eight megabytes. The added memory allows the eTrex Legend to accept downloaded map data from Garmin's entire line of MapSource CD-ROMs, including Fishing Hot Spots. The eTrex Legend comes in a brightly colored translucent blue case that really makes the unit stand out. New to the product design, Garmin will include marine aids to navigation in addition to the base map. These navigational aids will be pre-loaded into each unit from the factory. It is compatible with most Garmin MapSource products including MapSource BlueChart marine cartography, MetroGuide, and Fishing Hot Spots. Accepts up to 8 megabytes of downloaded map detail.
