Review: Garmin GPSMAP 62 handheld GPS device

Garmin's GPSMAP 60 series is practically the standard by which all other handheld GPS devices are measured, at least at the enthusiast level. The product was released about five years ago and still is popular today, so you can bet its follow-up is a...

This is a pretty good GPS.

Overall I found that no GPS is perfect and the technology itself has a long way to go. Each person will have different ideas on what is crtical for them to make a purchase. I reviewed the entire thing at http://borbon.us/wp/?p=173

Long battery life ; Accepts external memory ; Easy to use interface ; Works well in light ; Accurate ; Reliable ; Waterproof

Small screen (which is also why the battery life is pretty good) give one take another ; Price is a little high if you ask me

data downloading problems

Since I need to work in GIS, I am returning this model to REI tomorrow and getting one of the other Garmin models that will connect to DNR Garmin - personnel in store know little to nothing about GPS receivers, there is scant helpful info on the Garmin...

nice color display

Doesn't connect to DNR Garmin - doesn't offer the 62S as selection when registering on my.garmin.com - downloads tracks, but not waypoints - downloaded owners manual offers virtually no information concerning downloading data directions or problems

Great for Small Boat Use and Geocaching

I got my Garmin 78sc a couple of weeks ago, to use not only on the water (Chesapeake Bay), but for hiking and geocaching. By now I've sailed for 3.5 days,(about 18 hours total run-time), before needing to change the alkaline batteries, so I'm fairly...

Lots of marine features and alarms, such as anchor drag alarm, low water depth alarm, (from map depths) Man Overboard function, etc. The coastal marine plots seem fairly good and accurate to the paper chart I have of Upper Chesapeake Bay ; Very fast at...

Price kinda high, but the accurate marine charts are worth it. Base maps (on land only--the marine charts are good) are a joke, and optional 100K topo map software are still sparsely populated

Garmin has its act together

I would buy it again. Needs maps for inland lakes and cities/highways, but one can't expect it to do everything. Garmin's ease of use is great. Color screen, customizable themes, menus, great reception. It floats, works as an alarm clock without...

Battery save feature ; Compass feature is handy ; Easy to use menus ; Fast initializing ; Good reception in timber ; Pre-loaded coastal charts

Manual is pdf ; Steeper learning curve

Built in maps. Auto and marine capable

Poor speaker. Expensive. Optional maps expensive
