Garmin Nuvi 500

There are many uses for GPS beyond in-car navigation. After all, there are times you could use some route guidance no matter what mode of transportation. Yet, you don't see too many multiuse GPS on the market, and we're beginning to see why. A while...

The Garmin Nuvi 500 is a multiuse GPS that can be used in the car, on foot, on a bike or a boat. It comes loaded with topographic maps and features a waterproof casing.

The Nuvi 500 lacks text-to-speech functionality. Satellite acquisition time was a bit slow. A USB cable is not included in the box, and marine maps are extra.

The Garmin Nuvi 500 is a satisfactory multimode GPS, but serious boaters and outdoor enthusiasts should consider dedicated devices.

Garmin nuvi 500

In these competitive times when GPS manufacturers constantly vie to offer features that differentiate their products from all the others, it's hard to believe that the crossover GPS market has remained largely untapped. Well over a year ago, we...

Rechargeable, user-replaceable battery. IPX7-rated waterproof. Integrated with geocaching.com, a Web site that tracks geocaches. Topographic maps are included

Lacks text-to-speech conversion in automotive mode. Poor track log handling. Distance to destination didn't work in compass mode. No Bluetooth phone integration

The Garmin nüvi 500 is good crossover choice for those who don't want or can't afford separate dedicated automotive and outdoor enthusiast GPS devices.

Garmin nuvi 500 Review

Once upon a time you had to buy a GPS for the car, a handheld unit for outdoor hiking and Geocaching, another one for cycling, and yet a different GPS for boating. Enter Garmin's nüvi 500: one GPS, four modes.

The nüvi That Can Go Anywhere. Like Having Three GPS Units In One.

Great for driving. Good multi- purpose.

Nice all-around unit. Kind of like a dual purpose motorcycle. I got mine off E-Bay for $79.

Great for driving. I have never had it freeze up. Very user friendly. Mine speaks street names

A few errors while typing because of small screen and thick fingers. Fair for finding geocaches. I would like a clearer pointer screen

"Good All-around Unit"

I am very happy with this unit. It excels at what the Nuvi series is known for - in car navigation. It gives you topographic maps for hiking and can also be loaded with marine maps. Once I waded through their website and got the the software (3.42)...

Contrary to the review above, Garmin has provided Text-to-Speech which gives you street names by way of an update available from their website. I found satellite acquisition to be acceptable and subsequent use showed it to be very accurate.

Getting the mentioned downloads was not so easy and the instructions a little unclear.

"organizing multiple waypoints cause drops or duplicates"

Garmen is aware of the problem for 2 months and has yet got back to me to fix the problem. Every time I enter 6 or more waypoints and the have to add another point and reorganize, I might have a duplicate or it might drop a waypoint.

can be used for geocaching and hiking. Great contour lines

Organizing multiple waypoints causes drops and duplicates. If you make changes in waypoints, you might end up with duplicates and others deleted. Garmen can duplicate problem, and has not resolved problem. (2months)

"Good ifor on road performance. Bad hiking performance."

Lood for a better combination unit. It gives driving directions when walking. The cursor are some feet that are wierd, and difficult to interpert. When you are not walking, that is stopped with the unit on, in "creates" tradks. The unit keeps...

The touch screen is easy and generally intuitive. Using it in the driving mode is quite good, if not perfect.

It is very poor for walking.
