Autodesk 3DS Max 2008

Graphite modelling toolset and ribbon interface, render-preview effects in the viewport, enhanced OBJ support, containers, Material Explorer, mental mill

Some features already appeared in subscriber-only Creativity Extension for 3DS Max 2009, some known bugs and limitations, expensive

Autodesk's venerable 3D suite has received more than just a facelift. The workflow and tool enhancements are welcome, while the focus on audio and collaborative toolsets makes this a far more rounded package than before.

Value for money, large display, good text-to-speech performance, address entry method

Navman S100

Navman S100

By Ross Catanzariti

Design, user interface, large display, keyword search method, text-to-speech pronunciation, clear map screen

Touch-sensitive keys aren't always responsive, glide interface can be annoying to use while driving, traffic channel antenna optional extra

The Navman S100 GPS unit does lack many advanced features, like Bluetooth, FM transmission and built-in traffic capabilities, but it still provides an excellent navigational experience on the whole. This device is excellent value for money.

Qstarz BT Q1300

QStarz BT-Q1300

By Ross Catanzariti

The BT-Q1300 may be the size of a keyring, but this is a pretty nifty device. It tracks your movements accurately and of course, can also used for navigation when paired with a PDA or mobile phone. The included software does need some work though.

Size and weight, design, can log travel routes and record data, quick fix times

Software can be confusing and is in need of a revamp, one button operation can be fiddly at times

Compact, easy to use, simple map screen, Where Am I help menu, Australian text-to-speech voices

Small display with low resolution, unorthodox address input method, sluggish start-up time, no FM transmitter, lack of punch in volume, safety alerts aren't preloaded
