Harman Kardon Guide Play GPS-500

Design Much like the company's other products, the Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500 is a stylish piece of technology. It's sleek (4.6 inches wide by 3 inches high by 0.8 inch deep and weighing 7 ounces) and attractive, with a classic silver-and-black...

The Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500 features a stylish design and wide screen. It offers text- and voice-guided directions as well as music and video playback.

The GPS-500 doesn't support text-to-speech functionality, and it takes the system a while to acquire a GPS fix. Directions weren't always efficient.

Style and ease of use mark this basic portable navigation and multimedia device, but the Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500 doesn't offer the same smooth performance and efficiency of competing products.

Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500

Harman Kardon may be better known for its audio equipment, but the US company is dipping its toe in the GPS market with the Guide + Play -- a widescreen, touch-sensitive European satellite-navigation unit that also doubles as a video and audio player

Search-as-you-type destination finder ; long battery life ; clear navigation instructions

Shoddy audio and video playback ; basic media controls ; occasionally sluggish

The Guide + Play is a sat-nav device first and media player second. It's easy to use and has great route-planning abilities, apart from the odd sluggish moment. It's let down by basic media playback and poor performance, however, making it a...

Harman Kardon Guide+Play GPS-500

Harman Kardon enters the GPS navigation market with a combined satnav system and multimedia device. Comprehensive maps and good-sized screen means it looks the part, but can it safely find its way through our Best4Reviews test?

Ready to go out of the box, standalone design, screen, pre-installed Tele Atlas 2D and 3D maps, 2GB of internal memory

Claimed battery life optimistic, video playback “judder” and DROPped frames, not as svelte as it could be, frustrating menu system and address entry, screen easily marked, occasional system freezes

There’s no disputing the GPS-500’s prowess at satellite navigation. My one worry here was the claimed battery life of up to five hours. I got three hours at most on my tests after a proper initial charge of the system. Easy to follow audio instructions...

Harman Kardon Guide+Play GPS-500

A decent satnav unit, marred with occasional freezing and a rather basic media player

The GPS-500 is a very good satnav unit with a second-rate media player bolted on. It's got a great display and provides easy to follow instructions when you're driving around. At £345, it's a bit on the pricey side, and the random freezing in menus was...

"Great MP3 Player"

I am usually not one to complain. I feel that if you can't buy something good it has something to do with your intelligence. I am going to go beyond my pride and admit that it was a bad choice. I got lured in by the bells and whistles and the whistles...

Good sound from MP3 player and it might be pretty cool when I can download some video (trying many different formats, nothing work just yet.)

Really not a good GPS. Other features are pretty good but I would trade it in on my old Garmin Nuvi 200 in a minute but, I just can't seem to find my way home to do so.
