Mitac Mio 269 reviewed

The ominously named Dark Vision Hardware has a review of Mitac's Mio 269 mobile navigation system, which was released earlier this year. The 269 is a somewhat beefed up version of the cheaper Mio 268, with over 8 million miles of road maps from Tele...

Mio 269 review

Mio 269

Maps preloaded on hard drive; 1GB available for MP3s; touch screen; caters to walkers as well as drivers; includes windshield mount and car charger; fast start-up.

Difficult to use; slow screen refreshes; awkward POI database; can't play MP3s while navigating; USB 1.1.

Given the Mio 269's inconsistent performance and terrible interface, you can buy a much better GPS device.

Mio 269 mobile navigation system review

The Mio 269 includes an MP3 player so you can listen to your favourite music on it too and there's 500 MBs of storage on the hard drive, that's about 8 hours of music.

Pedestrian option routes are programmed through pedestrian-only areas and in both directions on the one-way streets.

Most of the following are very small shortcomings included more for the Mio Technology software development team as a matter of record than for the customer so please don't read too much into this. The Mio 268 and 269 are both exemplary systems with...

MIO 269

I am not familiar with other GPS units so I don't know how it compares, but I have been very happy with this unit. It takes a little bit to pickup your location when you turn it on, but it is very accurate. The worst thing is the battery life. I...

Nice idea, but...

I bought this in July 2005, because I liked the physical design and I fly a lot, needing to carry a GPS with me. If you need a GPS that fits nicely in your laptop bag when you travel, *and* you're willing to put up with a junk UI, this is your device....

Nice hardware / form factor design

Allows you to enter contacts, but no routing from those contacts; inaccurate maps (even in areas that haven't changed in decades); thin POI database; device time not set by GPS; silly keyboard interface (why should I have to cycle through three...

Product Specifications

The Mio 269 Plus satellite navigation system comes ready-to-go with detailed maps of 27 European countries pre-installed on the internal hard drive. The smooth, flat, pocket-sized body incorporates a fully integrated GPS antenna, spoken instructions and full color screen - and that's just the start. Equipped with a SirfStar III extra-sensitive GPS chip, the Mio 269 Plus catches satellite signals faster than before and holds them better. Whether you're in the center of a city surrounded by skyscrapers or in the heart of a forest, trust the Mio 269 Plus to keep track. A faster processor means quicker route calculation so you don't have to wait long to get started. Then there's the Mio Map v.2 for CE GPS navigation software. The preinstalled POIs now offer phone numbers so you can not only find a hotel close by, but also call to book your room. The compass mode makes it easy to navigate your way when you're walking around town. Mio Map even points out road signs and speed limits.
