Garmin nüvi 1260T

Garmin n?vi 1260T

By Craig Ellison

Most GPS devices today support multiple vehicle profiles, including one for pedestrian modewhich is often just an automobile mode that avoids highways and ignores one-way streets. But Garmin's new nüvi 1260T ($299.99 list) changes all that. When ...

Small form factor. Enhanced pedestrian mode. Subscription-free lifetime traffic

Expensive. Pedestrian mode doesn't use moving maps if GPS signal is available. Public transportation routes with optional cityXplorer could be improved

The pedestrian-friendly Garmin n?vi 1260T is thinner, sleeker, and more expensive than the 265T. Unless you plan to use the enhanced pedestrian mode and purchase optional maps, you're better off with the otherwise similar 265T.

Garmin Nuvi 465

Garmin n?vi 465T

By Craig Ellison

The GPS aisle in any electronics store is filed with devices for cars, but if you're a truck driver, you're more or less out of luck. Since truck drivers face restrictions like vehicle height, length, weight, and type of cargo, they require vastly ...

Lifetime traffic updates included. Truck-specific routing for road restrictions. Extensive truck-centric POI database. Maps for U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Multisegment routing. Lane assist. Truck and Car modes

Expensive. No POI category for rest areas. Truck-specific data only for continental U.S

Garmin's truck-targeted GPS is a solid first effort; but it could use a few minor tweaks.

TomTom GO 740 Live

TomTom GO 740 LIVE

By Craig Ellison

Connected devices, which integrate a cellular radio for up-to-the minute data delivery, haven't had an easy time establishing themselves in the GPS market. The first, the Dash Express, was unsuccessful, and Dash Navigation exited the hardware market ...

Integrated data connection for live traffic updates, weather, and fuel information and Google Local Search. TomTom's free Map Share helps keeps your maps up-to-date. IQ Routes. Advanced lane guidance

Live services require a monthly subscription after three-month trial period expires. Many voice functions also require touch-screen input. Relatively small internal POI database

TomTom's full-featured GO 740 LIVE sets the new standard for connected GPS devices, but its voice recognition features still need improvement.

Nextar SNAP7

Nextar SNAP7

By Craig Ellison

The Nextar SNAP7's ($349.99 list) whopping 7-inch screen is its biggest selling point. Like its siblings, the M3-03 and the Q4, the SNAP7 is a value- and option-packed device, but it has more than double the screen area you get on the typical 4.3-inch ...

Good value for a GPS with a huge screen. Text-to-speech conversion. Lets you choose between simple or advanced interface options

Small POI database. Not upgradable to support live traffic. Audio output isn't very loud. Screen appears washed out in bright sunlight

For those who want a huge screen, the Nextar SNAP7 GPS serves up seven sprawling inches and plenty of features, all for a palatable price.

Nextar M3-03

By Craig Ellison

Despite tough economic times, bargains still abound in the GPS market. In particular, Nextar's entry-level, 3.5-inch screen M3-03 is a solid navigation value. Much like its 4.3-inch-screen big cousin, the Nextar Q4, the M3-03 offers more features than ...

Solid features for an inexpensive, entry-level model. Text-to-speech conversion. Multisegment routing. Safety alerts
