The holiday season is the time of year when new GPS devices abound. So far this year, we've seen the Mio Knight Rider GPS, the Garmin nüvi 755T, and the full-featured Navigon 2200T. When I received Navigon's top-of-the-line 7200T ($449.99 list), I was ...
Slick design. Reality View Pro and Lane Assistant Pro. 3D Landmarks. On-route exit POI guide. Included lifetime traffic subscription
Relatively expensive. Small POI database. Voice-entry feature is underwhelming
The good-looking Navigon 7200T is loaded with features, but at almost twice the price of the impressive 2200T, it's hardly a bargain.

"How do I update my GPS's maps?" is a common question I receive from readers of my navigation device reviews. A number of GPS manufacturers, including Navigon and TomTom, offer for-pay, downloadable map updates on their Web sites. Or, if you use ...
Route-based live traffic (with subscription). Live fuel pricing. Online trip planning. Built-in 11-million-entry POI database
Lacks many of the features found in competing non-connected devices, such as lane preview, reality view, and multisegment routing
While an excellent concept, TeleNav's connected Shotgun GPS device with its built-in cellular radio doesn't offer as many location-based services as it seemingly could. While additional features are on TeleNav's development road map, we recommend ...

With its built-in cellular radio, this GPS device offers live traffic and fuel prices, but it could do so much more.

Times have certainly changed since Sony first entered the GPS market. When I reviewed the original nav-u, the company's first entry into the portable navigation, in April of 2006, the system came with a list price of $599.99especially hefty when you ...
Larger-than-standard 4.8-inch screen. Built-in traffic receiver. Effective mounting bracket. Easy menu system
Relatively limited POI search capabilities. Limited routing options. No vehicle profiles. Bluetooth phone interface didn't automatically reconnect to my cell phone
The larger-than-standard screen and extra features boost Sony's NV-U94T nav-u GPS, but limited route preferences and poor POI handling mar an otherwise solid device.

The Strada's 5-inch screen impresses, but the unit's performance disappoints.
Text-to-speech. Includes maps for U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Multisegment routing.
Small POI database. Sluggish performance. Awkward destination/POI input. No video input. Data fields in map view are small and difficult to read.
As with all 5-inch GPSs, you pay a premium for a slightly larger screen. Models with 4.3-inch screens offer more features and better performance for less money.

Despite a slumping economy, GPS devices are likely to be on many a holiday wish list this year. The good news is Navigon's 2200T ($229 list) is not only affordably priced, it comes with an integrated traffic receiver and a lifetime traffic update ...
Small and thin. Text-to-speech conversion. Multisegment routing. Handy features including Reality View Pro and Lane Assistant Pro
Small points-of-interest database. Relatively limited POI search capabilities. Includes maps for the continental U.S. only
If you can live with a 3.5-inch screen, the Navigon 2200T, with its free lifetime traffic update subscription, is an excellent GPS bargain.

At CES in January of 2008, Jeep Consumer Products announced the introduction of a Jeep-branded GPS. While I'm normally skeptical about "branded" GPS products, I was willing to wait for the product to ship and give it a chance. Many months later, my ...
User text-to-speech. Maps for U.S./Canada/Puerto Rico included
Expensive compared with the competition. Has route calculation problems
Don't be fooled by the marketing hype on this supposedly off-road GPSother brands offer more features for less money.

television series. Announced in early July, the Knight Rider GPS has hit store shelves and I took one of the first production models out for a spin.
Unique, theme-based styling. Text-to-Speech conversion. Multi-segment routing. Includes maps for U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico
Celebrity voice doesn't announce street names. Lacks vehicle profiles. Relatively limited POI search capabilities
Mio's Knight Rider GPS adds novelty to dashboard navigation, but traditional GPS models offer more functionality for less money.

Award: Editor's Choice!
Until the debut of its voice-recognition-based 800 series earlier this year, Garmin's nüvi 700 series had represented the company's top-of-the line offerings. In fact, the nüvi 760, our Editors' Choice, earned one of the highest ratings we've given to ...
Subscription-free live traffic alerts. Lane-assist view. 3D landmarks
Advertisements in traffic and map views
Garmin improves on its Editors' Choicewinning nüvi 700 series by adding new features, including free live traffic updates.
