The AVIC-S2 is well equipped and despite a somewhat confusing map experience, it remains a recommended, if not outstanding purchase.

Bluetooth, good maps, excellent volume scroll wheel, music player, safety camera warnings

Chunky and heavy, confusing map display at times, battery life

Pioneer AVIC-S2

The AVIC-S2 is competent but, aside from Bluetooth, there are similarly specified GPSes for less.

Neat looks ; Bluetooth for hands-free mobile usage

Map button doesn't go back to the map ; Pricey

So, the experience is little different to the Mio DigiWalker C220. For AU$200 extra, the only upgrades are the headphone jack, microphone, Bluetooth and a more expensive-looking design. Oh, and the Pioneer brand. We're not sure they justify the price...

With Pioneer's experience in car entertainment gear, hopes were high it could bring something innovative to the crowded portable GPS table.

Pioneer AVIC-S2

Just when you think you've seen everything that is possible a company like Pioneer comes along and jams even more functionality into an already packed device.

Technology is a scary thing. Well the speed at which technology improves and develops is what’s scary. Back when I first started out in audio, mobile phones were house-brick sized boxes that only the military had, blue-tooth was something you got after...

Pioneer AVIC-S2

I have found the AVIC-S2 to be very good, accurate and easy to use.

I like the way that it zooms up into an intersection so that you can see all the little turn offs and where you are exactly

Wish the instructions were in booklet form rather than cd

Pioneer AVIC-S2

This is the first GPS unit I have used and I must admit I am somewhat impressed. In particular is the extremely quick recaculation once you have missed a turn. The only down side so far is that in a couple of instances it wants to take you by the most...

Easy to use and quick recalculation

Misses out on more direct routes

Product Specifications

In a package equivalent to the size of a wallet, users get map coverage of the entire U.S. and Canada along with 1.7 million restaurants, shopping centers and other points of interest via the TeleAtlas database preloaded in the included 1 GB SD card. A built-in SiRF Star III GPS module and antenna make the system more accurate so drivers get where they need to go without stopping to ask for directions. The 3.5-inch touch panel provides a colorful and easy to read map. Innovative graphical user interface and 2D and 3D view modes give users a clear understanding of expected turns and exits. Furthermore, advanced map compression technology allows for effortless scroll and zoom of the map. On each trip, the system presents a route overview and allows users to change the route itinerary. This is particularly helpful when the user wants to avoid certain roads or areas. The AVIC-S2 has Bluetooth v1.2 technology, enabling hands-free operation of cell phones. Users with Bluetooth-enabled phones can store their contacts in the system and make and receive calls through the AVIC-S2's built-in speaker, microphone and touch screen, eliminating the need to pull the phone out of a pocket or purse to make a call. It also functions as an audio player. MP3 music files stored on an SD card can be plugged directly to the side of the unit.
