Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood

Spellbound Studios releasedDesperados: Wanted Dead or Alive in the summer of 2001. It was a game that owed more than a little to Pyro Studios' 1998 release of Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, and it featured the same sort of stealthy, tactical missions,...

But even so, even with unimaginative missions and some annoying technical problems, I still liked Robin Hood well enough. I'm just a sucker for the genre, perhaps, but I enjoyed the (approximately) 40 hours I spent playing the campaign, and I'd...

Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood

It's like Commandos in tights -- and that's a good thing.

Clever open-ended mission design; intricate 2D graphics

The AI for your Merry Men can fall on the dumb side; "pre-planned actions" can be difficult to master

Product Specifications

England, Anno Domini 1190. It is the darkest period of the English Middle Ages. King Richard the Lionheart is on a Crusade in the Holy Land, fighting to liberate Jerusalem from the heathens. The nobles he has left behind, led by Prince John Lackland, rule over the simple peasants with an iron hand, and this pure force of arms forces them to bend to authority. Only one man takes up the struggle against the oppressors, supported by a small band of brave and loyal followers. His name: Robin Hood. After a long absence, Robin of Locksley returns to England from his adventures in the Crusades. However he feels little joy upon returning home, since the country has changed since his departure. The peasants are being brutally oppressed by the Norman nobility. If anyone resists, they end up on the gallows or lose their land. Not even the Saxon nobility is spared: While Robin was fighting in the Holy Land, Lord Locksley - Robin's father - died, and since Robin too was declared dead, his father's lands have become the property of the scheming Sheriff of Nottingham. Dismayed by this turn of events, Robin decides to seek help from his relation Sir Godwin of Lincoln. He is determined to know what happened during his absence. But he finds the castle occupied by strange soldiers. Sir Godwin himself has disappeared. Robbed of his land, Robin roams the country. He rescues a group of peasants from the gallows; they fled into the forest of Sherwood to escape oppression by the nobility and began a new life as ambushers and poachers. Out of gratitude they now make Robin Hood their leader. At first the band limits itself to small attacks on Prince John's tax convoys. Robin Hood steals the gold, which has been extorted from the farmers and then gives the spoils back to them. Only when Lady Marian informs him that King Richard has been taken prisoner and that Prince John plans to refuse to pay the ransom demanded, does he begin an open rebellion against the Prince. And so begins the Legend of Sherwood. Of Robin Hood, the outlaw loyal to the king, who stole from the rich to give to the poor.
