Kenwood joins the ranks of Pioneer, Eclipse, and Panasonicwith the release of its DNX7100 all-in-one media receiver and GPS navigation device. A double-DIN-size in-dash system with a 7-inch touch screen display, the DNX7100 is an integrated version of ...

Harman/Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500

Though Harman Kardon is more well-known for its home audio products, the company has made a push into aftermarket car tech, starting with the Harman Kardon Drive + Play 2 and now the Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500. Merging navigation and ...

The Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500 features a stylish design and wide screen. It offers text- and voice-guided directions as well as music and video playback.

The GPS-500 doesn't support text-to-speech functionality, and it takes the system a while to acquire a GPS fix. Directions weren't always efficient.

Style and ease of use mark this basic portable navigation and multimedia device, but the Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500 doesn't offer the same smooth performance and efficiency of competing products.

Mio C520

The last portable navigation system we reviewed from Mio Technology didn't fare so well in our tests. It's a shame, because the Mio C220 had so much going for it--affordable price, good performance, compact design--but its screen was a complete wash. ...

LG LN740

LG LN740 GPS Receiver

By Bonnie Cha

LG Electronics is just one in a growing list of consumer electronic companies entering the U.S. GPS market. We first got a preview of the company's new portable navigation line at CES 2007, but recently we got the chance to get our hands on its ...

The LN740's low-resolution screen displays weak colors and appears washed out. It also lacks integrated Bluetooth functionality, which can be found in many other competing products. The device's speakers are weak.

The LG Portable Navigator LN740 is a good first effort from the company. Yet considering its low-resolution screen and lack of Bluetooth, you could definitely get more for your money with competing systems.

Garmin Mobile 20

Garmin Mobile 20 GPS Kit

By Bonnie Cha

In this day and age, buying a standalone GPS device isn't the only way to get navigation help. If you have a cell phone or smart phone, you can add software or GPS accessories to turn your mobile into a handheld navigation device. One such solution is ...

The Garmin Mobile 20 accommodates a number of Palm- and Windows Mobile-based smart phones and offers turn-by-turn directions and hands-free operation. You can also receive traffic alerts, weather updates and more, and send your location to contacts ...

The cradle design is somewhat kludgey, and we wish there was better hands-free integration. Speaker volume is on the low side, and the kit is a bit pricey.

Though the setup is a bit messy, the Garmin Mobile 20 is a nice alternative for smart phone owners who need navigation help but don't want to buy a standalone GPS device.

ECLIPSE AVN2210P

Eclipse AVN2210p

By Kevin Massy

The Eclipse AVN2210p is a novel addition to the aftermarket in-car navigation scene. It is the first system we have seen that combines the functionality of an in-dash GPS navigation device and media player with that of a standalone portable navigation ...

The system's interface for playing digital audio discs is disappointing. In standalone mode, the TomTom device can lose its GPS signal in built-up areas ; its lack of a pedestrian mode means that it's of limited use when on foot ; and its sub two-hour ...

Panasonic Strada CN-NVD905U

The Strada CN-NVD905U is Panasonic's first foray into the U.S. market for in-dash navigation systems, and it's not a bad start. The CN-NVD905U falls into the category of a small but growing number of all-in-one, hard drive-based navigation/multimedia ...

The Panasonic Strada CN-NVD905U combines fast navigation with a user-friendly touch screen interface and high-quality video playback.

Despite its built-in hard drive, the Strada CN-NVD905U has no ability to rip music files into its memory. Lack of text-to-voice technology for the navigation system is also disappointing.

The Panasonic Strada CN-NVD905U is a stylish, user-friendly entrant to the in-dash navigation market. It delivers decent GPS navigation and media playback, but doesn't raise the bar in either department.

Mio C220

Mio C220

By Bonnie Cha

There's a lot to love about the Mio C220. It sports a compact, no-fuss design. It's easy to use right out of the box and offers all the navigation basics. And when it comes to in-car GPS devices, you really can't beat its $250 price tag. Basically, it ...

The Mio C220 offers a compact, no-fuss design and an accurate GPS. The system is easy to use and all maps come preloaded on an included SD card. The C220 is also very affordable.

The C220's screen is barely readable in sunlight, and we wish there was an easier way to adjust the volume.

Though the Mio C220 offers ease of use, accurate directions, and an affordable price tag, its poor screen makes this in-car GPS device almost unusable.
