Garmin Forerunner 201 review

Garmin Forerunner 201

Lightweight and waterproof; stores up to 5,000 laps in its memory; offers tons of customizable settings; includes software that allows you to download training data to a PC.

Frequently loses GPS signals; no heart-rate monitor; occasionally reads altitude and pace incorrectly; uses a serial connection instead of USB.

If it weren't for a few performance blips, this feature-packed personal trainer with built-in GPS would be a must-have for runners, cyclists, and outdoor sports junkies.

GPS Review: Garmin Forerunner 201 - Overview

is to bring the GPS technology with you while you are out running, hiking, on the water training, or biking. It is more to measure where you went versus where you are going - which is OK, but keep this in mind as you consider it. Overall, the concept...

Garmin Forerunner 201 - Pocket-lint

Training on a treadmill gives you a host of stats to pace and race against. Whether it's the speed you are going or the distance you have travelled it's

Virtual partner, waypoint support, large clear screen

Cumbersome, doesn’t work as well in built up areas

With additional support for downloading your times to a PC (software has to be downloaded from Garmin's website) this is unit has it all. Of course nothing is perfect and we did experience trouble receiving a signal when in heavily built up areas,...

"I've used this for years"

I really like my 201, and I won't replace it until it dies. But I would have thought that the price would have come down a bit since I bought mine.

Totally reliable. The battery is still like new, and doesn't drain when I put it in storage for a few months. The display and buttons are a little bit bigger than most. Screen can be illuminated. Good handlebar mount.

Much bigger than most others, so better suited to cycling than running. GPS altitude readings are consistent, but generally accurate to 25 feet (On one stretch of my ride by the ocean it always tells me I'm 12-15 feet below sea level).

Great Running Companion

I've been using the Forerunner 201 for over 5 years and it does a great job of giving pace and distance covered for each run. It also provides a history of your running sessions. The history can be downloaded to your computer via the supplied cable and...

It takes several minutes for the device to acquire GPS satelitte signals. Typically, I turn it on and set it outside a few minutes before my run to allow it to capture the GPS satelitte info

Great Training Tool for Runners

You want to train for a race? This is a great and inexpensive tool to help you log in your miles fairly accurately (more accurate than a Nike + system). The 305 is more accurate and has a faster signal aquisition, and also $200 more.

Easy to figure your milage for running log.

Loses signal with light foliage overhead coverage (would expect it if it was dense trees or a tunnel)

Product Specifications

The Forerunner 201 is the first all-in-one personal training device that uses GPS satellites to calculate speed, distance and pace. There's no calibration required, and Forerunner's extremely easy to use, so you'll be off and running in no time. You don't even have to think about starting and stopping the timer or punching the lap button to record stats. Forerunner will do it automatically. And when you need motivation, Forerunner's Virtual Partner feature lets you input pace, time and distance goals, and then shows if you're ahead or lagging. User-customized display includes training time, pace, distance, lap pace, lap time, lap distance, average and best pace, elevation and calories. Stores up to approximately 2 years of training histories. Review lap histories to-date, by day or by week. Download histories to your PC using free software from the Garmin Web site. Automatically pauses the training timer when you slow down below a specified resting pace; timer resumes when you start running again. Automatically triggers a lap when you reach a specified distance. Allows you to run anywhere and still get accurate performance data. Allows you to input training goals based on time, distance and pace. Forerunner displays a graphic "virtual partner" that will run with the set goal, so you can see at a glance if you are keeping up or falling behind. Alarm sounds if you are slower or faster than pace you've input. Alarm sounds when you reach the specified time or distance.
