Synology DS209+ NAS server

By (cnet.com)

Very fast throughput ; loads of features ; robust and intuitive Web interface ; RAID 1 and RAID 0 support ; great expandability ; Download Station supports eMule, BitTorrent and Web sites that require authentication

Requires some networking knowhow to use and take advantage of its advanced features ; Surveillance Station supports only one camera out of the box ; eSATA port located on the front ; requires a tool to install hard drives ; expensive

Although expensive and difficult to use for networking novices, the Synology DS209+ offers awesome throughput speed and nearly all the features you could ever need in a NAS server.

Setup and ease of use The Synology DS209+ review unit we received comes with...

Solid NAS plus bells and whistles

By Mecodoug (newegg.com)

My second NAS - the first was a SimpleShare from simpletech that I bought over 5 years ago and was another solid 24/7 embedded linux performer albeit a lot slower and limited to 250GB.

Solid build, power efficient, quiet, very responsive online support, seems pretty bulletproof. Fast, though I don't have a lot to compare to. email notification of drive or unit issues

A little more expensive than others, but I think it was worth it. If a drive fails the unit beeps every few seconds, and there is no way to turn it off without accessing the unit via a browser. This should be configurable via the OS, so if the unit is in...

Excellent product

By marasm (newegg.com)

Highly recommend the product!!!

Awesome little machine with abundance of features. Once the initial install is done (took me about 5 hours for the 2x1TB drives set in a RAID1) running this thing is a breeze. And the WEB interface this thing provides deserves its own design/usability awa...

Excellent NAS unit

By atdsm (newegg.com)

Overall, this is an excellent unit. You get a lot for the price. I used it to replace an old desktop that used to be our home server; this unit is way better and uses a quarter of the power. It has an excellent number of features. It's way more than the b...

For the money, this is an extremely feature-rich unit. It supports not only networked file sharing, but also a web server, an ftp server, a mail server, a photo center, and a music server... and more! The documentation is fairly complete and there is a st...

Doesn't come with drives, which means you pay a little more and have to assemble it yourself. (It assembles quite easily, so this isn't a problem unless you aren't comfortable working with computer internals.) The web interface is good, but does not offer...
