AIAIAI TMA-1 Studio by Young Guru review

AIAIAI's original TMA-1 Studio headphones are close friends of ours. Since first checking them out last November, this reviewer has been using them as reference ‘phones – not because they're the most accurate or precise headphones we've tested, but...

Clear upper register ; Warm, powerful bass ; Deep, well defined stereo image ; Comfortable new padding

Lighter instruments sizzle ; iOS inline mic is clunky

The TMA-1 Studio Young Guru edition bring a flash of presence and clarity to the top end, and keeps all the goodness of the original headset’s silky bass and deep stereo image.

Aiaiai TMA-1 Studio

From its headquarters in Denmark, Aiaiai designs what its website describes as “…modern and minimalist headphones and earphones.” Visit the site and you'll notice minimalism seems to be part of Aiaiai's entire approach, from its logo through the entire...

Warm bass ; Clear, detailed treble ; Well balanced stereo sound ; Rich, resonant tone

No iOS control button included ; Vocals low in some mixes

Even if you aren’t in the market for a $250 headphone, the TMA-1 Studio are worth hearing for the sheer pleasure of the experience – and they just might convince you that investing a few extra bucks in a set of cans can pay huge dividends.

Aiaiai TMA-1 Professional DJ Monitoring

With the headphone market saturated with cookie-cutter models, it's difficult for a single model to stand out, but Aiaiai's TMA-1 is the exception to the rule. Inspired by the design of the Sennheiser HD 25, the $200 headphones cut a stripped-down...

Aiaiai's full-sized monitoring headphones are suitable for DJs and music lovers alike. They are built to last, with an expandable rubberized wire and a robust, one-piece design.

There's no material to cushion the thin rubber headband, which can lead to fatigue after long periods of use.

The sleek TMA-1 headphones by Aiaiai are ideal for traveling DJs who need tough headphones with an up-front, bass-slamming sound profile.

The TMA-1 Upgrade: TMA-1 Studio

We're back with another AIAIAI review! It's been a while since we talked about the Danish makers of the famous TMA-1, around 2 years to be exact and...

So with most of my amps, I expected the treble to be more sparkling and up front for a DJ headphone. Probably AIAIAI tuned down the treble as this is the Studio version of the TMA-1 but I can’t say I enjoyed the “standard” treble using this setup. I...

Aiaiai TMA-1 Studio Headphones Review

Aiaiai TMA-1 Headphones Review

Looking at the box containing the Aiaiai TMA-1 headphones, one would expect flashy, “Look-at-me” headphones to be packed inside. After all, they were developed by and for DJs, and DJs like to be noticed, right? What you may not know is that Aiaiai is a...

Cool, minimalist design ; Warm, forgiving sound ; Comfortable ; Built to take abuse

Leather pads showing premature wear ; If you like analytical sound, look elsewhere ; Foam pads leak sound

AIAIAI TMA-1 Review

The stunning minimalist design of the phones, conceived by Danish design studio KiBiSi, and of course the name as well, is what got me interested in them. “TMA-1” stands for “Tycho Magnetic Anomaly 1”, the name of the monolith in Arthur C. Clarke's...

Great sound quality for a closed phone – warm, dynamic, punchy, fast, non-fatiguing, not nasal or honky, no recessed midrange ; Very efficient, very loud even with underpowered MP3 players ; Excellent minimalist design ; User-replaceable...

Might sound too “weighty”, “full”, or mid-heavy for some kinds of acoustic music ; Heavy and awkward coiled stock cable (can be easily replaced) ; Foam ear pads don't deliver balanced sound quality (use the leather pads instead) ; Slight...

Will the TMA-1 dethrone the Sennheiser HD 25-1 as the be-all-end-all DJ phones? Probably not. Do the TMA-1 generally sound better than the HD 25-1 to my ears? Yes, they do – especially noticeable in the bass, treble, and soundstage. The TMA-1 midrange...

Low-key headphones from a brand born out of Denmark's DJ culture

Expert review by:

AIAIAI TMA-1 Studio Headphones

The new TMA-1 Studio headphones are the latest addition to the TMA-1 DJ headphones from Aiaiai, aimed at the contemporary producer.

Durable; good amount of bass; comfy

Don’t fold in half (not very portable); lacks detail on finer tracks

At $50 more than the old TMA-1 DJ headphones, they are nearly worth the buy for the slicker look and slightly, but not great, finer quality on the tracks, though for a DJ this can be overlooked with the expert bass it has.
