Superlux HD681

While the words "audiophile" and "budget" are usually mutually exclusive, this is an area we're keen to explore here at CNET, especially in the Audiophiliac blog. Products like the Pioneer SP-BS22-LR bookshelf speakers and the Lepai LP-2020A+...

The Superlux HD681 semi-open headphones approach hi-fi quality with a very detailed sound, and have a very even bass response; also, they are well-constructed, comfortable, and insanely cheap.

So ugly; not very dynamic and can compress some music; can sound shrill with bright material; open design means they don't work well in loud environments.

Despite atrocious cosmetic qualities, the insanely cheap Superlux HD681 headphones have a sound that aspires to greatness and only narrowly misses the mark.

Superlux HD 681 EVO Headphones Review

When Superlux contacted us and offered to send Technoodling a review unit of the HD 681 EVO in a choice of either black or white, I instantly said “White!” And as you can see from the photos, I was not disappointed by my choice. The white HD 681 EVO is...

The EVO has a hefty dollop of bass (maybe even a liiiiiittle too much), which depending on your listening tastes, may either delight or disappoint you. I lean more towards bass-heavy music so I was pretty enamored with it. And for late night movie and...

Great Value

If you are on a tight budget, are unwilling to spend a lot on a headset, or are just looking for a cheap travel companion, these headsets are for you. They perform well, don't break the bank, and, if you do break them, they are easy to replace. You...

These headphones are well tuned to perform straight out of the box. The bass is there, the mids are clear, and the highs are are acceptable. Obviously, these aren't meant to go toe-to-toe with $150+ headphones, but I don't believe that you will find a...

The only real cons that I have come down to personal preference ; I prefer velour, these only come with pleather ; The clamping force is just a little too high for extended comfortable use (2+ hours)

HD681 Open Back Headphones

If you have a few extra bucks, I would recommend the HD668B instead: It has the features that the 681s are lacking. However, if you are like me and don't really care about the few cons that I listed, then these are probably the best value headphones...

The HD681 is a great buy for the price. Right out of the box, the bass is warm and not overpowering, the mids are great, and the highs are pretty decent (though, not great). They are surprisingly comfortable and very durable. I have dropped them a few...

The clamping force on these are just a little high for my liking. I don't notice it until after a couple of hours, but they do become fatiguing. The included earcups are nice, but I personally prefer velour (I didn't factor this into my rating because...
