Sony MDR-EX71SL (Black)

Earbud-style headphones are ultracompact and extremely portable, but most offer substandard sound and don't fit well. Sony's Fontopia MDR-EX71SL, listed at $50 (but widely available for less), is one of the few earbud models that rise above the fray,...

Ultracompact and comfortable; included carrying case and extension cord; sounds better than most earbud-style sets.

Some less expensive, nonearbud headphones sound better; not ideal for runners; cord length and behind-the-neck styling may be problematic for some users.

If you're searching for reasonably priced premium earbuds, stop here and take a hard look at the Sony MDR-EX71SL headphones.

Sony MDR-E827G

Lightweight and compact sports design; includes wind-up carrying case; water resistant; can be used with or without included foam earpiece covers; gold-plated miniplug.

Mediocre sound; loose in-ear fit; doesn't include extension cord.

The MDR-E827G earbuds may look sporty, but they didn't fare well during our sweat sessions.

Unlike most people, I never hated the standard iPod earbuds. Never, that is, until I got a pair of Sony Fontopias. And you know what? Standard iPod earbuds suck.

If you're looking for a premium pair of in-ear headphones that effectively block out sound and deliver a lot of bass directly into your eardrum, here you go. And for your iPod purists, they also come in white.

Review: Sony MDR-EX71SL Earbuds

Thoughts The Sony MDR-EX71SL earbuds offer great value and performance and can be classified as a mid-range product. I would recommend these earbuds for everything but sports activity. They are great for studying in noisy places, blocking out noise on...

As long as you don't use this on your phone device using the longer cord adapter, the sound is good. Shame you have to hold the mute button to get good sound when plugged into your phone. W/O the cord, music on the phone sounds good. Also sounds good...

Good fit, good sound, no sound transferred when the cord move or brush up against you like other can

When I use the additional cords works great with anything but phone. When I use on my Nokia 5230, music or phone calls sound muted & tinny unless you hold down the mute button on the long adapter cable. The mike seems to work ok but
