Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL review

Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL

Ultracompact and comfortable; included carrying case and extension cord; sounds better than most earbud-style sets.

Some less expensive, nonearbud headphones sound better; not ideal for runners; cord length and behind-the-neck styling may be problematic for some users.

If you're searching for reasonably priced premium earbuds, stop here and take a hard look at the Sony MDR-EX71SL headphones.

Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL Earbud Headphones

Unlike most people, I never hated the standard iPod earbuds. Never, that is, until I got a pair of Sony Fontopias. And you know what? Standard iPod earbuds suck.

If you're looking for a premium pair of in-ear headphones that effectively block out sound and deliver a lot of bass directly into your eardrum, here you go. And for your iPod purists, they also come in white.

Review: Sony MDR-EX71SL Earbuds

Thoughts The Sony MDR-EX71SL earbuds offer great value and performance and can be classified as a mid-range product. I would recommend these earbuds for everything but sports activity. They are great for studying in noisy places, blocking out noise on...

I'm a victim to these headphones

The short cored is perfect if you have an armband for your ipod. This model blocks out a good amount of background noise.

Perfect for the gym

They fall apart quickly. I've owned a half-dozen pairs over the last few years. Also, I'm almost positive that the included ear plugs are designed to fall off rendering the headphone useless. I just keep buying them again and again because they're...

Good sound and yet...

When I first got these I thought they sounded tinny, until I realized I had not properly connected the headphones to the extension cable. Never having worn earbuds before, they felt awkward at first but after continued use I could use them comfortably...

Excellent sound at a great price. Comfortable to wear once you become accustomed to the unusual placement in the ear, using the right size earbud helps. Extremely good at drowning out background noise

As others have noted, and I wish I had taken note of beforehand, the cord is somewhat flimsy. With low to moderate use and little travelling, mine lasted just over a year before the sound in one ear went out and the insulation on the cord frayed,...

I HATED these

Can you tell I hated this product? Newegg is fantastic, btw.

Look Good

HATE the asymetrical cord (either too long or too short) it was always getting in the way ; Cord always tangles - somehow sony engineers can up with the exact characteristics of softness and grippines to make this cord tangle like no other I've...

Poor build quality, don't buy these

I've owned many pairs of headphones and never had any problems with the rubber coming off. It looks like Sony doesn't care about build quality very much. If you're looking for in-the-ear headphones, I would try something else.

Audio quality is very good on these headphones because they cancel outside noise (although that makes them a bit dangerous since you'll be less aware of your surroundings)

I've bought two pairs of these headphones on separate occasions and both times the cords would get twisted up and eventually the rubber on the cords would come off and expose the wires. The headphones still worked, but the cord usually got exposed...

There must be a better choice

If you are going to use these a lot with average abuse, like putting them in your pocket, they won't last. I'm sure there's a better option out there somewhere.

When they worked, they were good. A pretty good price for what you get.The sound is good, they block outside noise well, and they fit comfortably

The quality on these is poor. I have had mine for over a year and after about 6 months, the right ear lost most of its volume, so a lot of overall volume was lost. I don't know how that problem occured, as I never did anything abusive to them. Also,...

Love it!

The included case is a nice touch!

I know that one person complained about the length of the cord (without connecting the supplied extention cord), but it would seem that Sony analyzed this product and who would be using it perfectly. The primary cord is the PERFECT length for reaching...

The extention cord is a little on the long side
