Sony MDR-NC200D Noise Canceling Headphones Review

We've never been big fans of headphones that use active noise cancellation, chiefly because they mask the sound of aircraft engines, HVAC systems, computers, and other sources of ambient noise by generating noise of their own. A far better strategy, in...

Detectable active noise cancellation, EQ needed to compensate for muddy sound

Sony MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones

Highly effective noise cancellation that auto-adjusts to your environment. Comfortable for long-term listening. Detachable (and thus replaceable) cable

Distorts badly on bass-heavy songs when noise cancellation is engaged. Uses triple-A battery despite ample room for a rechargeable compartment

Sony’s MDR-NC200D Digital Noise Canceling Headphones auto-adjust to the ambient noise in your environment, but they suffer from distortion that should never occur in this price range.

Sony MDR-NC200D (Black)

The first thing you'd probably ask me if you were going to buy these active noise-canceling headphones is whether they're better than the the Bose QuietComfort 15 or Bose QuietComfort 3 models.

The Sony MDR-NC200Ds are compact noise-canceling headphones with a creative design, deep bass, and adequate noise cancellation. The headphones fold up to fit into a convenient carrying case and can still play music without the noise cancellation engaged.

Slight, but audible hiss with noise canceling on, and the headphones lack an integrated microphone for making calls.

If you can't afford Bose's QuietComfort noise-canceling headphones, the attractively designed and more affordable Sony MDR-NC200Ds are worth your consideration.

Sony MDR-NC200D noise-cancelling headphones review

Anyone who commutes to a big city knows how loud and distracting things can get -- whether it's the whine of a bus engine, a subway car's ca-clank or

Effective noise-cancellation ; Ultra comfortable fit ; Pleasing active sound quality

Eats batteries ; Passive sound quality is so-so ; Passive noise-isolation needs improvement

Nitpicks aside, the NC200Ds delivered well enough in most aspects to warrant the $200 asking price.

Good noise-cancelling, snug fit

Slightly muffled and smooth sound compromises detail and bite

Good noise-cancelling, but so-so sound

Solid Pair of Noise-canceling Headphones

+ Comfortable, well designed, great sound quality

"Great value. I am very satified. Highly recommend."

Great headphones. Highly recommend.

Light and compact. Great sound and NR. Use w/or w/o NR. Long battery life on NR. Can find good price. Detachable cord. Monitor feature. Extra battery, cord exten, ipod nano w/ strap, 2-pin adapter fit in case. Comfortable on a 12 hr flight.

They aren't made by Bose so now I need to figure out what to do with an extra $200 in my pocket.

"As good as Bose at much less the cost"

I've used Bose noise canceling earphones for years. When the outer ear cups on my last pair inexplicably peeled off when I laid them on the cover of a paperback book overnight, and Bose only offered to sell me new ear pads at full cost, I decided to...

Comfortable on-ear fit, great noise cancellation, neatly folds into compact case

Annoying monitor button easy to accidentally push

Consumer review by:

"Rich sound and very effective noise cancellation."

Excellent value ($140 @ Overstock.com) Fold into nice case for travel. Noise cancellation has no annoying hum or buzz. Work when NC is off or battery is dead. Detachable cord is very convenient. Reasonably comfortable.

Tend to get a bit warm after wearing for extended periods.

"Effective noise-cancelling headphones."

I've used these headphones for over a week (roughly 25 hours) and I can strongly recommend them. The artificial intelligence feature seems to work well, and I often make use of the Monitor button - it deactivates the NC feature and mutes the audio....

Comfortable; well made, highly portable, nice features.

Wish it had an in-line mic for answering calls.
