The XB700s are bassy and plush, and will uncomfortably dig into your skull as they rattle it around.

For the price, we could see these as a sound investment.

Drum and bass lovers will definitely go for the extra punch delivered by the Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Headphones. We'll show you why.

Sony MDR-XB700

Sony's xTra Bass range of headphones are designed for bass lovers. You know them well -- they drive through your suburb late at night with drum'n'bass...

Plush, decent acoustic noise cancellation

Slightly recessed treble, heavy, short cable (and silly cable design)

If you are a bass-head the MDR-XB700 will suit you perfectly, with slow, powerful low frequencies prioritised over all others. For discerning music listening they are not so spectacular.

Sony's monster headphones are designed to pump out bass, primarily, with their huge size implying extreme audio heaviosity. They're also incredibly comfortable, like strapping a pair of feather pillows to either side of your head. The pillow effect...

The sound here is loud, upfront and packing more bottom end than John Prescott in tights. With electronic music and, in particular, the bassier end of the dance music spectrum – dubstep, gnarly techno and hip-hop – the XB700s are what young people call...

Venture beyond electronic sound and limitations soon become apparent. You wouldn’t use these to listen to Elgar or Coldplay – that’s a pair of strong points in their favour – but logically, the XB700s should tear your head off with something like Led...

For dance, industrial, electronic pop and mechanical contemporary classical of the Steve Reich variety, these are just the job, as long as you don’t mind looking like a cyborg. If its subtlety and nuance you’re after, these aren’t for you, and it’s...

Great headphones for His and Los

The Sony MDR-XB700 Extra Bass Headphones sound amazing in regards to high and low frequencies. To be concise they almost sound too clear with fruity highs while lacking midrange. However, if you are looking for a set of cans that produces amazing,...
