Sony MDR-Z1000

The Sony MDR-Z1000s ($549 MSRP) are a mid-range set of over-ears that, while extremely durable, have some glaring flaws in their sound performance compared with their competition. They are definitely well-suited to perform as a set of headphones that...

Not bad, but we’d wait on picking them up until they came down in price.

A scientific, in-depth analysis with side-by-side comparisons

Ignoring the price, the Sony MDR-Z1000s are a durable set of over-ears that will probably have longevity on their side over other headphones, but you certainly pay for that. It may not be as hard to swallow that high price tag if the MDR-Z1000s were...

Sony NWZ-Z1000 Walkman review

Finding a chink in Apple's armour is not easy, especially if you're attempting to breach Fortress iPod which seems to have all the angles covered. But Sony isn't ready to give up just yet, launching an all-new Walkman in the shape of the NWZ-Z1000.

Colouration to the low midrange/upper bass, could be more transparent

Nicely built headphones with an impressive sound – and useful flexibility

Hard to justify

I've been flip-flopping about what to say about these since I got them but at the last, rather than present some clinical analysis, I just have to share my personal inclinations. The strength of these cans is also their weakness, and that's a statement...

Very, very accurate

Sony MDR-Z1000

When amped, from a full sized setup, these have a great sound quality (tonality) ; Not bass monsters (some may class this as a negative, however, for anyone striving for a 'pure', 'accurate' sound, these are much more rewarding than the boom-boom-boom...

Need a dedicated headphone amp to really shine (then again, you wouldn't spend this much money without expecting that to be the case!) ; Headband can creak when walking around (contact between the headband and the port at the top of the main units) ;...
