You don't have to spend a lot to get great headphones. We tested six full-size models that each cost less than $100 (one of them significantly less), and we came away impressed by what you can get.

Sony MDR7506

Introduced way back in 1991, the Sony MDR-7506 has long been a favorite headphone of recording engineers and other sound professionals. The origins of its design date even further back, since the MDR-7506 is, in fact, a refresh of the Sony MDR-V6 that...

Sony's MDR-7506 closed-back, full-size headphones click with all music genres and are comfortable to wear for hours at a time. They sound excellent for their relatively modest price point.

With a coiled, pro-style cable and lack of an inline remote/microphone, some will find the 7506s less mobile-friendly than more modern headphones.

They've been around since 1991, but the Sony MDR-7506s are still great sounding -- and fitting -- headphones for less than $100.

Once more unto the budget bin, dear hobbyists—these Sonys are worth it.

Consumer review by:

"Good sound, but not durable at all."

The sound quality of these headphones is really good. They're comfortable.

The hinges on the earcups broke repeatedly and I devolved to holding them together with superglue. After less than 1 year of use the sound in the right ear stopped working. The springy cord is annoying.

Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphone

I first invested in my pair of Sony 7506's with a package of 2 turntables and a mixer all 5 years ago. After almost spending $200 on a high end pair of Sony's at the time, someone at the local music store told me to get a pair of 7506's instead. I've...

Crystal clear sound, very bendable and flexible for on the fly mixing in clubs, studios, and various parties

The padding around the headphones collecting moisture and seperating

I don't have the greatest sound card, Audigy 2 ZS, so I'm probably holding back the SQ. It is very flexible will fit very large domes! Has a really long coiled cord I can walk any where in my 12x13 room from my desk in a corner. Doesn't completely seal...

D DOESN'T REST ON YOUR EAR :D! Made with quality parts = durability! Great SQ! Great over value

Going on three years just minor tears in the thin covering around the ear cup due to wear and tear

For the price, you cant find better. Well maybe you can. The Sony MDR-V6.. which is the exact same pair of headphones as the 7506, though with a different model number, and with gold plated ep pin. However, the price is approximately $20 cheaper...

"Value - Sound quality - durability"

I originally purchased the 7502 which are very good sounding headphones at a lower price; but, are not as durable as the 7506's (The lightweight band broke). I use these for mixing live and studio recordings as well as with my Sony MP3 player. I highly...

Accurate sound reproduction and durability

A little heavy and the ear cushion covering wore out in a relatively short period of time

Poor Connector Desgin

Sound quality is very good, ambient noise masked

Poor connector design

"Reliable, durable, and pretty decent"

I've owned a pair since 1994, and it's seen constant use since then - still works fine. Music reproduction is pretty good and it's just fine for old time radio.

Very durable, decent reproduction, nice for the money.

not in the same league as Ultrasone
