Sony PFR-V1 Personal Field Speaker

The most common reaction I've received to the $400 PFR-V1 Personal Field Speaker is, "What the hell is that? Orthodontic headgear?" Hardly! It's pair of earphones and a set of very small speakers, rolled together and perched on a headband that places...

Comfortable. Unconventional design adds space and depth to the listening field.

Overpriced. Distortion at low frequencies. People around you can hear your music.

Sony's PFR-V1 Personal Field Speaker looks rather odd, but it provides a fun and interesting audio experience. Unfortunately, it's also overpriced, impractical, and plagued by distortion at higher volumes.

Sony PFR-V1 review

Sony's loudspeaker engineers have taken a radical new look at 'phone design. The PFR-V1 aren't noise-cancelling headphones, far from it. The principle behind them is to basically suspend miniature speakers in front of your ears and then encourage you...

Stylish and unique design ; Strong bass ; Extraordinary audio exerience

Sony PFR-V1 headphones review

An interesting product, but not one we'd ever pay nearly £250 to own. Too many other headphones offer superior sound quality, although they won't give you the unique speaker-like experience the PFR-V1s do. But if you hate headphones and love speakers,...

Sound quality ; Speaker-like listening experience

Price ; Not amazingly comfortable ; Inconvenient for most listening environments

Are they worth nearly £250? Yes, if you just can't afford or find impractical a hi-fi to listen to less rocky, gentler music; and yes, if you want to avoid bulky open-backed headphones, or if you suffer 'sweaty ear syndrome' with regular cans....

Sony PFR-V1 Personal Field Speaker Headphones

Sony's latest headphones may look strange, but the sound they produce is simply sublime.

It's not too often that I'm genuinely surprised by a product, but that's exactly what happened when I placed the PFR-V1s on my head. Perhaps unfairly, I hadn't expected these headphones to sound anywhere near as good as they do, and even now I'm not...

Review: Sony PFR-V1

We take a look at these unconventional headphones which have a sticker price of almost US$500.

Sound quality; speaker-like listening experience

Price; not amazingly comfortable; inconvenient for most listening environments

It's clear these are priced to ensure Sony doesn't easily waste the huge R&D expenses that will have gone into developing this model, but it's hard not to like them despite their questionable comfort and subtle bass response. Are they worth US$500?...

Sony PFR-V1 review

Sony's PFR-V1 headphones certainly can't be labelled dull-looking. A bizarrely cantilevered sonic work of art, they look like no headphones we've ever seen before. But, do they provide the right amount of sonic pleasure for your measure? Hmm?

These are not just headphones. No, this is Sony's "near-field speaker system". It places woofer tubes into your ears while holding two spherical "speakers" just shy of your lugs, apparently because this is going to sound better than simply wearing a...

Well, they look like something you'd be given to wear after suffering severe head trauma, don't they? The PFR-V1s also leak sound like a garden sprinkler - you can forget going out in public in these unless you're incredibly brave or anti-social....
