Turtle Beach Ear Force AK-R8 Headset

One of the reasons we picked Turtle Beach's Ear Force HPA2 headset as one of the 19 awesome upgrades we recommended in our June 2007 issue was the fact that it's analog and can be paired with a soundcard. The new Ear Force AK-R8 is USB only, but this...

Good sound, packed with features

Juvenile rumble effect

This is the best headset we’ve heard for gamers who prefer to roll without soundcards.

Turtle Beach Ear Force AK-R8 Headphones

Turtle Beach is back with a new gaming headset, the USB based AK-R8. Unlike the HPA series, the AK-R8 includes its own sound card. On top of that, the software is robust, the feature set is solid and the sound can get LOUD. These headphones might just...

Feature-packed... well designed ; Software is robust and caters to tweakers ; Vibrating woofer adds to the experience, whether gaming or music ; Included mic works well

Can get loud... be careful ; Doesn't compete to a good set of cans with decent sound card

To compare these headphones to the previous HPA I had been using, I used a collection of songs from various genres, as you can see in the foobar screenshot. My music collection is kept in FLAC.

Turtle Beach Ear Force AK-R8 Review

The realm of surround sound gaming is still expanding, every company wants a piece of the action, be it through dedicated solutions or dedicated surround headset technology. In this case Turtle Beach goes the way of the Headphone with the latest in the...

It's one thing to test headphones out in general scenarios, it's another to really push them, in this case it was a test to see how far the AK-R8's could go, I was already aware they could rumble quite well, but what about in 4 Speaker mode with the EQ...

Poor Quality

Headphones are open air. On the plus side it lets one to crank up the volume without hurting the ears, however on the negative side everyone can hear clearly what is being played; to one's neighbor, it's like having a set of speakers playing on the...

The included USB sound card is great and has a lot of features including 7.1 processing and optical SPDI/F out ; Headphones sound nice when they aren't falling apart

Headphones have a low quality construction ; The band that goes over your head is kept there by a small piece of elastic which snapped on mine. I was able to fix it by disassembling the band and using a safety pin to reattach the elastic ; The metal is...

Turtle Beach Ear Force AK-R8 USB Connector Circumaural Multi-speaker 5.1 ch Surround Sound PC Gaming Headphone System

When starting to play a game the voice would become staticy. Loading the default configuration from the setup panel fixes it quickly.

Comfortable, easy to use, great 5.1 emulated sound and sound environment location. Microphone is easily taken off and is fairly hard to break

cheap material for the headband. If not taken care of this part will fall off and make it less comfortable. If you change usb ports you will need to reinstall to get rid of errors. Drivers conflict especially with newer sound drivers for games. If...

Good sound, bad feel

I have a somewhat large head and these headphones flat out hurt. My ears were red and sore after 5-10 minutes. I had to return these, which was a bummer because they are the only actual surround headphones I could find for the price. My 3 star rating...

Good sound ; Surround worked fairly well ; VERY loud. I have pretty good hearing and I was using these at 4-7% volume and it was plenty loud. If you like loud headphones these are probably for you

Not big enough ; Hurt my ears and head ; Headphones did not have large cups or edges that go around your ears. Just rigid rings. Not a big deal, but I prefer softer edges

Best for the dough

Would not buy anything else but these.

Cross platform, great for gaming, excellent sound and performance, does not conflict with sound card, very good musical/movie performance, and does not disturb the roommate

Can get slightly uncomfortable when wearing for more than a hour or two

Meh

You can get other headphones that are more comfy and have the same sound quality as these, I recomend you buy those. the 5.1 surround sound really doesent do mutch... Virtual 7.1 surround sound sounds the same.

The sound module on the cord is really nice, the mic is very high quality, very sturdy, doesent break easily

Very uncofortable....The first time I put them on they were really tight and crushed my ears. The fabric is verry scratchy and picks up alot of dust. The surrounding ear pads are so small and dont cover your ears, they just squash them. I already...

Works with Vista... with a few pains

**Attention** Vista x64 Users -I noticed Vista has a problem when plugging and unplugging the headphones in, they would not be recognized even with reboot, if Vista is not recognizing your headphones do the following: -Download and Install driver from...

Light ; Comfortable ; Plenty of bass ; Good sound staging ; Self adjusting headband, just put them on and enjoy

Drivers ; Slight hiss when nothing is playing, very minimal ; When first plugged in the default sound is set very high, just be careful
