Yamaha Pro 500 review: Flashy headphones for audiophiles

Yamaha is unique among headphone manufacturers in that it also makes world-class pianos, keyboards, drums, and saxophones, so the company has a deep appreciation of what real music sounds like. It's not surprising then that the flagship model in its...

The Yamaha Pro 500 full-size headphones offer very accurate, clean sound. They come with an Apple-friendly mic and remote, a 10-foot-long home cable, and a nicely designed travel case.

Expensive; not one of the most comfortable pairs of headphones we've tested.

While they're a bit overpriced, the Yamaha Pro 500 headphones deliver excellent sound tuned to satisfy audiophile tastes.

Editor's Choice!

Yamaha PRO 500

At the top of Yamaha's new PRO line of headphones, the $399.95 (direct) Yamaha PRO 500 is a formidable beast. At first glance, it may appear to take its cues from the Beats school of design, with a focus on glossy plastic and logos. But the PRO 500 is...

Clean, powerful audio performance, with deep bass and no distortion at top volumes. Provides an excellent sense of depth and space in the stereo field. Detachable cables—one with iOS device controls and microphone, one without

Can be uncomfortable during long listening periods. Expensive

Both a luxury and an investment, Yamaha's PRO 500 headphones deliver rich bass and a wide stereo field, easily earning our Editors' Choice award.

Yamaha Pro 500

Huge and heavy, these are a good fit for larger heads.

If you have a rather copious cranium, these might be the headphones you're after. However, if you have a merely average-sized head, keep looking—these are unlikely to fit you well. While it may sound like a minor issue, keep in mind that the fit of the...

Beltronics Pro500

The Beltronics Pro500 is an effective radar detector that minimizes false alarms and for the most part only alerts you to real threats. See how it compares with other detectors.

This detector effectively minimizes false alarms

There is no AutoLearn feature

This is one of the best radar detectors from Beltronics. Its sensitivity increases along with speed, making it an efficient radar detector that for the most part alerts you only when there is a real threat.

Yamaha Pro 500

The Yamaha Pro 500 headphones are some of the sleekest headphones for bass. Read how they compare to other bass headphones.

These headphones are well designed, and the single-sided cord and controls are convenient and easy to use

The Pro 500s are heavy and uncomfortable, and they have no noise isolation

Even though the bass isn't naturally loud, at high volumes the bass improves and is very dynamic.

Sound on par with its some popular names

I was looking for a cheap and cheerful, fun sounding closed can for listening at my computer at work and some limited portable use. I typically listen to EDM in this setting and had been using the Shure 840s. Although a great headphone the 840's did...
